Remembering my go to person (for more years
than I can count) at the Saline Courier-
LYNDA HOLLENBECK. She was always there
when needed to promote and event.
She would show up, follow up
and always go that extra mile. She loved our
community and helped promote it through her
writing as Senior Editor at the Saline Courier.
My favorite moment and example was when
the Benton Mural was just an idea.
1. Freddie Burton and Arline Rainey ask me
to create a mural design and use it to
raise money for the project. Lynda wrote an
article to help promote the project.
2. She was ask to come to the first mural meeting.
Lynda showed up with note pad and camera.
3. Muralist Mark Davey ask if we could have
people in costume act out my mural characters.
I ran to the Courier and ask Lynda if there was
anyway the Royal Players could help us with
the photo shoot. I gave her a list of characters
we had limited time. Lynda and Shannon Moss
showed up and helped find treasures in the
Royal Players costume storage.
4. With Lynda working with the Royal Players it didn't take
much for me to talk Lynda into being one of
the characters -the lady at the train. The
costumes didn't fit perfect we used pins and
cloths pins to tighten from the back. Lynda was
worried about how she would look with the
oversize dress and I assured her I could photo
shop her photo and it would be great. It was
superimposed on top of my rough draft and
gridded for Mark's reference for painting.
5. As the mural progressed Lynda and the
Saline Courier covered the story of the
Benton Southwest Trail Mural with several
articles.
6. Lynda will always be remembered by me as
that special person that would help me promote
art events and adult and children awards.

More than that she will always be
THE LADY AT THE TRAIN on the Benton mural.

We are back in the studio completing
awesome art. The first of Jan. we were
able to get in classes before the snow.
Looking forward to next week.

The Hendrix Grocery store Bauxite, Ark.
An art commission for Bridget Stuckey
and her husband. I was waiting to
post until Christmas was over and
all presents received.
We started this project before the
Bauxite mural, knowing the mural
would be the top priority. She was
so patient. She had old photos of
the store and her parents and
grandparents standing in front
of the building. The figures were
very small, but they were pleased
with the finished project. The
ventage signs on the building
were fun to research & draw.
Finishing the pen & ink in Oct.
they ask for prints of the original
for family members.
The original of the store was finished
in watercolor. Everything finished just
in time for Christmas.

Remembering art student and friend Frank Willix.
Frank loved painting portraits of family and friends.
A little Coffee while painting helped the paint go
down smooth on the canvas. Ha😃
He never met a stranger and loved sharing stories

Gann Building Benton, Arkansas 1893
The building was Dr. Dewell Gann Sr.’s medical office where he treated patients from the Missouri-Pacific, Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railroads and for a number of industrial plants in the area in addition to his regular practice.
It was built in 1893, by patients, who could not afford to pay for his services.
It is the only known building made of Bauxite. The stone was dug from a masonite farm, hand sawed into blocks, and allowed to harden. On an inside wall there is an imprint of Dr. Gann’s foot. He would sit in his rocker and prop his foot against the wall as he waited to see his patients.
There are two front entrances to the three room Victorian building, one was for women and the other for men. Each waiting room has a separate entry to the examining room at the rear of the building.
Dr. Dewell Gann Jr. gave the office building to the city of Benton in 1946 to be used as a library (1946-1966) and later a museum (1980).
The building is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Shoppach House - circa 1852, Benton, Arkansas
Benton’s oldest standing house was built in 1852 by John F. Shoppach, a German immigrant.
An L shaped house formed from bricks made on the site, has corbelled brick detailing at the roof line. It has four rooms with six inch pine, pegged floors which have been scrubbed with lye soap and sand to restore the white look of the period. The walls are plaster with chair rails.
In April 1861 a ceremony presenting a battle flag to Saline County’s Company E First Arkansas Infantry Confederate States of America was held in the Shoppach yard.
When Benton was occupied by the Union Army in 1863 Union Army Officers took quarters in the house.
The Shoppach House is on the National Register of Historic Places.
