UNDERGROUND RAILROAD TOUR
Bucks County played a prominent role during the Civil War as slaves from the South sought their freedom in the North.
With history in the spotlight this year as part of the America250 celebration, the Historical Society of Bensalem has planned a trip to visit some of the nearby Underground Railroad sites in Lower Bucks. With members of the new African American Museum of Bucks County serving as our guides, we will stop at the Bensalem AME and Bethlehem AME in Langhorne churches and at the Harriet Tubman statue at the Bristol Wharf. At each site and during our travels between sites, our guides will regale us with interesting facts and stories. Our tour will end at the Continental Tavern in Yardley, which housed a railroad stop in the basement, and have a delicious lunch. The cost is $60, which includes the meal.
Our tour is scheduled for Tuesday, May 12, leaving from the First Baptist Church parking lot at 215 E. Richardson Ave. in Langhorne at 8:30 a.m. After lunch, the bus will bring us back to our cars at about 2:00 p.m. Since we will lunch in a private room on the second floor of the tavern, we hope that you will be able to manage the stairs, as there is no elevator. Please call the Historical Society at 215-639-6575 to reserve your seat and arrange for payment or to ask any questions.

Please join us on Thursday, April 2, 2026 @ 7pm for our monthly meeting. Kathleen Pasko, a living historian, will talk about Tales of the Marbleheaders, the Life of a Continental Soldier of the Revolutionary War. She portrays Samuel Bartlett, a member of Glover’s Marbleheaders Regiment, soldiers and sailors from Massachusetts. She has been an active reenactor for nearly twenty years, participating in the annual Crossing of the Delaware. She loves sharing her knowledge of our nation’s founding with others.
The Marbleheaders were active in the War during 1776 and 1776 especially in Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey. The Marbleheaders were instrumental in saving Washington’s army on three occasions. Tales of the Marbleheaders will include the stories from these three battles and the fishermen who became patriots and heroes.
