Last week we invited you to write a 6-Word memoir for this portrait, and now let's see who they are.

This is Henry D. Fillmore (1863-1935) who came from a long line of Bennington families and claimed membership in the Sons of the American Revolution through his great-grandfather Nathaniel FIllmore who fought in the Battle of Bennington. He did well in school and found work as a bookkeeper in the firm of Olin Scott where he was employed for 47 years. He was one of the partners of the Fillmore and Slade tissue paper mill, located between Bennington and North Bennington next to the Paper Mill covered bridge.

He married three times, first in 1884 to Louisa Park, who died in 1887 and left him with a daughter. Second he married Effie Luther in 1892. She died a year later, but he continued to live with her parents until their deaths. His final wife, Mary Newcomb who he married in 1925, survived him.

Fillmore was Captain of Company K in the Vermont National Guard at the time this photograph was taken in the early 1890s. During the Spanish American War his company was called to duty and sent to Camp Chickamauga. They never saw action, but Fillmore was promoted to Major at this time, a title which he retained for several years after the end of the war.

The next 6-Word Memoir will be posted Tuesday afternoon. Stay tuned!

The Battle of Bennington looms large in local history. August 16, 1777 was an important victory for the American forces. The anniversary of victory was celebrated the year after, and continually ever since. The celebration even makes its way into the museum's Pottery Gallery.

These jugs are tiny, only around 4 inches tall, and were designed as souvenirs for locals and tourists visiting Bennington on the 100th anniversary. Inscribed on most of these jugs are the date of August 16th, 1877 or some version of “Bennington Centennial.”

What’s New with the Weitsman Collection?

Collection of the New York State Museum, Albany, New York, gift of Adam Weitsman

It may seem like only yesterday that John Scherer presented at Bennington Museum on the Adam Weitsman stoneware collection and Adam signed copies of the oversize book, Art for the People, but it was in Fall of 2015 – more than a decade ago. The collection at the New York State Museum has grown in the past 10 years and on Friday, May 29, 2026, we will receive a noteworthy update. John Scherer, Curator emeritus, and Jennifer Lemak, Chief Curator of History, at the New York State Museum will discuss exciting new additions to the collection and the status of an enlarged display area for this wonderful decorated stoneware and a revised edition of the book.

$7 for Bennington Museum members
$10 for not-yet-members

After the current St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church opened in 1892, the old building further up West Main Street sat vacant. According to the 1909 note on the back of this postcard, it was occasionally used for confessions or for weddings of people who wanted to be married in the same place they had been baptized.

In 1923 the Bennington Historical Society acquired the property with the intention of using it for a long awaited museum. After lengthy renovations, the building was opened in 1928. Almost 100 years later, the Bennington Museum has expanded considerably. Today the old church structure is home to our Regional History Room and the beloved Church Gallery.
