Last Thursday, October 15, we had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Lawrence T. Locklear, Director of Southeast American Indian Studies at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, to give a presentation on the Lowrie War. We appreciate Dr. Locklear for sharing this fascinating part of our region’s history with us as part of our ongoing programming related to the Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition ‘Americans,’ which will be on display at Murchison School through November 21.

In 1986, Karen Montoya, a member of the P*e Dee Indian Tribe, organized the WindWalkers Indian Dance Team to teach P*e Dee children traditional song and dance, and to share these traditions with the larger community. Originally, there were 13 dancers between the ages of 4 and 10. Nearly a decade after they were organized, in 1995, the group was invited to perform at McKissick Museum in Columbia. You can see some of the regalia worn by members of the WindWalkers in our local exhibit on indigenous people of Marlboro County, on display in Murchison School through November 21, and you can follow this link to read a first-person account of being a WindWalker, written by award-winning journalist Kenneth "Randy" Garner. https://marlboromuseum.com/windwalkers
