The Benicia Historical Museum shares the story of Benicia’s place in the history of California and how this history relates to the development of our country pre- and post statehood. The name, Camel Barns Complex, comes from one of Benicia’s unique contributions to US Military history. In the 1850’s and 1860’s, the US Army experimented using camels — imported from the Mideast — as pack animals. Af

ter the advent of the Civil War the experiment was abandoned. The remaining camels were brought to the Benicia Arsenal to be auctioned to the public, and housed behind what is now our Museum. Museum Hours: Friday and Saturday 1 pm to 4 pm
Office Hours: Wednesday through Saturday 11:30 am to 4:30 pm

Today, the Museum of History Benicia joins communities across the country in celebrating Juneteenth. A day commemorating June 19, 1865, when freedom was finally proclaimed to the last remaining enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

As stewards of the historic Camel Barn Complex—a site whose story spans the decades before, during, and after the Civil War—we recognize that American history is both complex and ongoing. Juneteenth reminds us that freedom, justice, and equality have not always been experienced equally—and that understanding our shared past helps us build a stronger future.

Today, we honor the incredible strength, resilience, and lasting contributions of Black Americans—both nationally and right here in our Benicia community.

Happy Juneteenth.

We’re Hiring!

The Museum of History Benicia is now accepting applications for a Director of Operations & Volunteer Engagement. This position will help lead and strengthen the Museum’s rental program, volunteer engagement, day-to-day operations, fundraising events, and community outreach.

Starting salary: $58,000
Schedule: 35 hours/week, 5 days a week, onsite in Benicia

Donation collection will begin again as scheduled on Tuesday, June 16th.
