Over the course of 2–3 classes, participants learned how to build their own bent-shaft canoe paddle under the guidance of Don Carlson. Each participant had the opportunity to design and customize their paddle, creating something uniquely their own.

This was the third paddle-building class Don has taught, and we hope there will be more in the future!

Don crafted his very first paddle in 1999 and has been creating them ever since. He works with a variety of woods, including cedar, birch, black walnut, and others. Whether he is making a paddle for himself or for someone else, he enjoys incorporating unique handles and custom design elements that make each paddle one of a kind.

We were thrilled to welcome Don and his class to the Headwaters Science Center. Thank you, Don, for your hard work, dedication, craftsmanship, and passion for teaching!

Check out this fascinating relationship between African giant millipedes and mites!

Here at the Headwaters Science Center, our millipedes host tiny mites that live on their exoskeleton. The mites feed on bits of debris while hitching a ride, and in doing so they help keep the millipede clean. It’s a great example of a unique symbiotic relationship in nature!

Did you know we have two Giant African Millipedes?

They are among the largest millipedes in the world, growing up to 14–16 inches in length! These invertebrates can have between 200 and 300 legs, with body segments having two pairs of legs each. The only exceptions are the head and tail.

Native to the forest floors of Eastern Africa, these millipedes are detritivores, meaning they help break down and recycle decaying plant matter. While their eyesight is quite poor, they make up for it with their highly sensitive antennae, which they rely on to navigate their surroundings.

Employee spotlight of the week!

Meet Sam!

Sam is a docent and educator here at the Headwaters Science Center. He loves working here because he gets to share science with people. His favorite exhibit are the axolotls because they are a unique and highly adapted animal.

A fun fact about Sam is that he discovered this job opportunity while out on a bike ride! During the ride, he met our Executive Director, Lee, and the two struck up a conversation about science, education, and the possibility of Sam joining the Headwaters Science Center team. The rest is history!
