Honoring Ww2 Navy Cross recipient and Ace fighter pilot during Guadalcanal Campaign. Brigadier General, Rivers Morrell Jr. of California.

“The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Major Rivers Judson Morrell, Jr. (MCSN: 0-5553), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism in aerial combat whiles a member of Marine Fighting Squadron TWO HUNDRED TWENTY-THREE (VMF-223), Marine Air Group TWENTY-THREE (MAG-23), FIRST Marine Aircraft Wing, against enemy Japanese forces in the Guadalcanal Area between 24 August 1942 and 5 September 1942. During this period Major Morrell, single-handed, attacked and shot down four enemy aircraft and, aided by another fighter pilot, a four-engined Japanese flying boat. On 5 September, after destroying a twin-engined bomber, he was seriously wounded but, despite his critical condition, coolly and skillfully landed his damaged plane at his base. His aggressive leadership and outstanding performance of duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.”

By direction of the president, under the provisions of the act of Congress, approved 9 July 1918 (WB Bul 43, 1918), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the silver star for gallantry in action is awarded posthumously to the following named enlisted man:

Private First Class Arthur G Hartley Jr, US 51015021, infantry, United States Army, while a member of Company L, 179th infantry regiment, 45th infantry division, distinguished himself by gallantry in action against an armed enemy, near Karhyon-Ni, Korea.

During the pre dawn hours 16 June 1952, enemy units peppered a friendly outpost with mortar and artillery fire. Realizing that the bombardment was most probably a prelude to an infantry attack, private Hartley, a communication Man, moved among the bunker positions urging the men to move to their firing positions as soon as the barrage subsided.

When the enemy assaulted the outpost, a violent fire fight ensued. While firing his carbine at the advancing ranks, private Hartley suddenly realized that the enemy had penetrated the perimeter on his left flank and was seeking cover in the allied entrenchments. Oblivious to the danger from mortar, rifle, and gr***de fire, he dashed through the fire swarmed area to the very edge of the treacherous bunkers. When his carbine jammed, he secured an automatic rifle from a wounded Comrade and fired into the foe from the edge of the emplacement.
While exposing himself, private Hartley was fatally wounded by hostile machine gun fire. This gallantry and aggressive fighting spirits displayed by Private Hartley on this occasion reflect the highest credit on himself and are in keeping with heroic traditions of the United States Army.

Judge Joseph R. Bossetta

Born on August 12, 1927, Bossetta graduated from Holy Cross High School in 1942 at the age of 14 and, like many of his generation, enlisted in the Marine Corps at 15. At a time when most teenagers are starting to think about college, Joseph R. Bossetta was already a battle-hardened Marine. As a Forward Observer assigned to the 4th Marine Division in the Pacific Theater, Bossetta directed artillery fire on Japanese forces, a task that required action beyond enemy lines in order to better obtain coordinates on the enemy. Forward Observers were considered high-value targets because of their crucial role in calling in the heavy guns. By war's end, Bossetta had fought in such major battles as Roi, Namur, Kwajalein, Saipan, Tinian, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Shortly after turning 18, Bossetta witnessed the official capitulation of Japan. As a member of Task Force Thirty-One he participated in the initial landing and occupation of Japan and the capture of the HIJMS Nagato, which symbolized the unconditional and complete surrender of the Japanese Navy.
He later served as a Judge Advocate in the Marine Corps Reserve from 1976-1982, retiring with the rank of Major.

In 1963 Governor Jimmie Davis appointed Bossetta to the judiciary where he would serve as judge in the municipal and criminal district courts for more than 25 years, both in elective and appointive capacities. During his time on the bench, Bossetta instituted rehabilitation programs for offenders addicted to alcohol and drugs and started a clinic for battered women.
