You still have time to get holiday cards out—but probably not enough time to craft a do it yourself Balsa wood sculpture as your greeting card. This one, by Helen Phillips, was first sent out in 1957. One recipient, the Surrealist Man Ray, returned a photograph and note back to her asking if he did it, right!? The exhibit is on view through February. .phillips.archive

Beloit College students are so fortunate to not only have two academic museums on campus (Wright Museum of Art and Logan Museum) where they learn, curate, and work, but also benefit from the University Partnership with the The Art Institute of Chicago! At least once a semester, channels and classes are granted behind-the-scenes access and career focused discussions with AIC staff. Additionally, admission to AIC is free year round for all Beloit College students.

From 1950, I developed my own personal system of color printing. I found that the varying depth of the plates, the control of the “false biting” of zinc plates which caught points of color, [gave] further points of variation and richness.

This publication highlights the significant role Neese played in establishing a collection of contemporary art for teaching at Beloit College. The catalogue was generously funded by the Neese Family Foundation.

We are experiencing technical difficulties! Opening next month, the experimental prints of Helen Phillips will be on display in the Hollensteiner gallery. Come learn about the printmaking techniques Phillips and other artists explored at Atelier 17, including (images from left to right): scorper for embossing, deep bite (plate), simultaneous, color, printing, and creeping bite—among many others!

Getting up close and personal with the prints of Helen Phillips, whose work will be on display this November at the Wright Museum thanks to .maxwell and the artist’s daughter-in-law .phillips.archive. We are loving these saturated colors (a result of simultaneous color printing) and proud, topographical shapes (a result of open bite)!
