WALES has a new world champion after Swansea’s Liam Rocky Rees shocked a bareknuckle boxing legend.
Rees headed to Leeds to take on local hero Scott McHugh for the historic Police Gazette Boxing Corporation Diamond Belt.
McHugh was added to the sport’s Hall of Fame recently, had won his previous four fights and had a sold out crowd cheering him on at the John Charles Centre for Sport .
Rees silenced them with a third-round knockout win that could lead to lucrative fights in the United States with promoters BYB Extreme Fighting Series .
The 30 year old said: “This is the best thing that’s ever happened to me.
“I was the underdog. I came to his home town to fight the best in the division. I can’t be underestimate anymore.”
The fighters were straight down to business and after two minutes of action in the three-sided trigon, Rees was cut under his left eye and blood dripped from McHugh’s nose.
At the bell to end the second, Rees went back to his corner with his face swollen and bloody, while McHugh raised his arms triumphantly to cheers from the Yorkshire crowd.
Rees started the third better, scoring with hard, jolting single punches from both stances and after McHugh pushed out a lazy jab, the Welshman cracked him on the jaw with a perfectly-placed right-hand counter that flung him to the floor.
McHugh was still trying to get to his feet when the referee reached the count of ’10,’ sparking wild celebrations in the Welsh camp.
