Attention Lawrence County High School and Junior High School Students:
The VFW is dedicated to promoting patriotism and investing in our future generation. If you are a democracy-loving high school student interested in a $35,000 college scholarship or a patriotic middle school student interested in winning $5,000, these scholarships may be for you.

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
For high school students, this is an audio-essay program that provides students with the unique opportunity to read and share their essay recording on this year’s America 250 theme, “What a Veteran Taught Me About America.”

JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
For junior high school students, Each year, more than 81,600 students in sixth through eighth grades enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen® annual youth essay contest for a chance to win their share of more than $1 million in local and national awards. Each first place VFW Department (state) winner receives a minimum of $500 at the national level, and the national first place winner wins $5,000!

The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief.

ELIGIBLE STUDENTS
Junior and High School students interested in participating must submit their essay prepared on this year's theme, with a completed 2026-2027 entry form, to the Mitchell VFW Marvin Davis Post 9107. Submit applications by midnight, Oct. 31, 2026.

Biologist John Castrale will be speaking about "The Return of the Bald Eagle, Our National Symbol" tonight (Monday, October 12) at 7 p.m. in the museum meeting room. The presentation follows our monthly LCHGS meeting, which is at 6:30. Both the meeting and the speaker presentation are free and open to the public, and we hope to see you there!

Tickets are now on sale at the museum for "Bad Blood in Bryantsville," our historic walk exploring the story of the murders of brothers James and Charles Rout in June of 1904. The event is October 30, 6-8 p.m.

The evening begins at the Bryantsville Church of Christ and includes a guided walk hearing about the tragic events surrounding those murders from costumed reenactors.

After the walk, we will relocate to the Commercial Building at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds for a light supper and a presentation by Believe Paranormal about their investigation into sites relevant to the tragedy. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors over 65, and $10 for students.

Although some tickets will be available at the door, please be advised that when the capacity of the venue and/or our catered supper has been reached, we will not sell any more tickets, so if you want to guarantee your spot, please purchase your tickets ahead of time. Thank you for your understanding!
