Field trip days are the BEST days! 💚💚💚

We brought history to life for around 120 fourth graders from Helena Park Elementary School in Nederland yesterday. The big grins, excited whispering, and eager questions as the students toured the Historic Home’s first floor, explored the Carriage House, and enjoyed a garden talk and activity made the day extra special for our team.

We’d like to thank Helena Park Elementary School staff and parents for the opportunity share this historical and cultural treasure with your students.

☑ Number 30: “Fashions for Your Delight” Style Show

In October 2011, Museum volunteers enjoyed a fabulous style show, “Fashions for Your Delight,” planned, organized, and directed by Gloria Ayres and Peggy Ducote, chair and co-chair of the Volunteer Education Committee at the time.

The style show featured fashions from the 1940s, modeled by Museum staff and volunteers.

A gorgeous guest room fit for royalty. 👑💙

Completed in 1906, the McFaddin-Ward House has more than 25 rooms spread across three lavishly decorated floors. The Blue Bedroom lives up to its name by featuring the color in abundance throughout the décor. From the silver-blue damask pattern wallpaper to the dusty blue bedding and window treatments to the royal blue Rococo Revival chaise lounge, ocean tones dominate the space.

Used as a guest bedroom for visiting family and friends, the Blue Bedroom includes a fireplace, walk-in closet, and private bath.

We’re excited to have our very own Director of Visitor Experience Kourtney Bonzo speaking at the 2026 Texas Volunteer Management Conference this Friday, Oct. 16!

The conference brings together volunteer engagement professionals, nonprofit leaders, and community builders from across Texas and beyond to share ideas, learn from one another, and strengthen the impact we make through volunteerism.

Kourtney’s virtual session is entitled “From Transactional to Transformational Volunteering Building Meaningful Pathways for Volunteer Engagement, Leadership, and Community.”

We had a great time learning about the history of the radio at today’s Homeschool Workshop! 📻

Students explored how the invention of the radio changed the world and discussed the important role radios played in homes like the McFaddin-Ward House during the 1930s-1940s. A real-world example of a 1930 Motorola radio from the Museum Collection brought the history lesson to life, and a fun activity creating radio commercials put the students’ broadcast skills to the test.

Our next FREE Homeschool Workshop, “Thanksgiving Traditions,” will be Tuesday, Nov. 10. Students will discover the history behind Thanksgiving and learn how the celebration has evolved over the years.
