The Beaufort Art Association mourns the loss of longtime active member and past Board member Ellen Long, who passed away peacefully at her home on Fripp Island on August 19, 2026, at the age of 85.

Ellen was best known for her beautiful watercolor paintings and was a devoted member of the Thursday Painters Group for many years. She considered the Beaufort Art Association her second home and was deeply committed to the organization and its growth.

Ellen played an important role in the history of the BAA. Approximately 30 years ago, she was instrumental in establishing our first gallery on Port Republic Street, behind our current location. She was also involved in the move to the Elliott House and, ultimately, to our present storefront gallery. Her dedication and enthusiasm helped shape the BAA into the organization it is today.

Ellen’s artistic talent, friendship, and years of service will be remembered and cherished by the many BAA members and friends whose lives she touched. She will be greatly missed.

Ellen’s family will host a Celebration of Life at the Beaufort Art Association Gallery on Saturday, October 24, 2026, from 5:30–7:30 p.m. All BAA members and friends of Ellen are warmly invited to attend. A selection of Ellen’s paintings will also be available for purchase at the event.
