Joseph “Joe” Byrne prized himself as a hyperrealist and atmospheric painter, capable of painting the “feeling” of the air, its density and the way it held the light. He wanted the viewer to be standing where he stood, breathing the humid salt air, while listening to the swaying of the marsh grasses and oak branches. Not only was he one of the finest painters to live in South Carolina, he was a historian of Hunting Island and a strong advocate for the preservation of our low country wetlands and barrier islands.

This evening, we will revere in the glow of “The Belt of Venus” (the Golden Hour or Magic Hour) and think of you, “the Artist.”
