The Old Lincoln Courtroom and Museum: A Hidden Gem in Beardstown

Beardstown, Illinois, boasts a remarkable treasure that even many residents may not fully appreciate. The Old Lincoln Courtroom and Museum located at 101 W. 3rd St., is unique as the only courtroom where Abraham Lincoln once practiced law that remains in use today and has been meticulously preserved to maintain its original appearance from Lincoln’s era. This historic site gained particular fame in 1858 during Lincoln’s most notable case, The Duff Armstrong Trial—also called The Almanac Trial. Lincoln secured his client’s innocence by cleverly using the Old Farmer’s Almanac to challenge the prosecution’s key witness.

Beyond the courtroom, visitors can explore a two-story museum filled with Lincoln artifacts, exhibits showcasing the history of Beardstown and the Illinois River Valley, and a gift shop offering books and souvenirs related to Abraham Lincoln.

This historic site is a source of pride for Beardstown. However, the ongoing operation of the Old Lincoln Courtroom and Museum depends on community involvement, and currently there is a shortage of volunteers to help keep it running. From setting up displays to giving tours to helping in the gift-shop to joining its governing commission, people are needed in every capacity.

If you or anyone you know is interested in volunteering at the OLCM, please contact Paula Woods at 217-248-6053 or [email protected]. No experience necessary.

Come by the Old Lincoln Courtroom and Museum on Saturday from 1-3 pm and get a FREE picture taken with our new Lincoln Statue. And don’t forget to rub his nose for good luck!
We are still collecting funds to finish paying for the statue, which sculptor Stan Watts was gracious enough to deliver to us anyway so we would have it for our Fall Fun Festival. So we will be accepting (tax deductible) donations all weekend at the courthouse.
But come by and enjoy the statue and have a free picture taken Saturday from 1-3 pm. It’s a wonderful addition to our downtown area that we’re very proud of and want the community to enjoy.

Thanks to the city workers who helped unload our Lincoln sculpture last Saturday so it would be in place for the Fall Fun Festival this coming weekend. Sculptor Stan Watts brought it himself, helped with the placement, and then engraved his signature on the back. It is truly a beautiful piece and will be on permanent display in front of the Old Lincoln Courtroom and Museum. Museum volunteers I’ll be on hand from 1-3 pm Saturday to take free Polaroid pictures of visitors sitting on the bench with Lincoln.

Join us Saturday, September 20th at 9 am as we take delivery of the life-size bronze sculpture we had commissioned of Abraham Lincoln sitting on a bench. It’s an interactive piece where people can sit on the bench with Abe and have their picture taken. It will be positioned between the old Lincoln Courtroom and Museum and City Hall, across from the city square.
The creator of the sculpture will be bringing it himself so you will also get the chance to meet him. He was also gracious enough to deliver it to us in time for our Fall Fun Festival, even though we have not completed paying for it. So we will be continuing to accept donations after its delivery.

Hello Friends of Old Lincoln Courtroom & Museum. It was brought to our attention that last year’s book signing was inadvertently showing up as a scheduled event for this weekend. The event has been deleted from our facebook calendar. Please be aware that we are not holding a book signing this weekend. We are sorry for any confusion this may have caused.

Wishing everyone a happy Memorial Day weekend and a warm welcome to all returning BHS alumni.
