Welcome back to another instalment of Throwback Thursday History!

Did you know that Commandant Russel Waesche is credited with founding the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary? He was the first to hold the office of vice admiral and later admiral in the history of the United States coast guard. His service to this nation and its coast guard during the second world war will never be forgotten as the auxiliary force he envisioned continues to serve the American people to this day.

As a Coxswain of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary I am required to wear a PLB at all times I'm on duty. Its one of those safety items you hope you never need to use, but if you need it you'll be very glad you have it.

Did you know....

That an Emergency Locator Beacon can be small enough to wear on your person? ELBs this size can help you get vital help if you end up in the water!

I just walked the banks of the Saginaw River this afternoon, no ice yet but it might be coming soon. Be prepared. Check out our web site at https://wow.uscgaux.info/content.php?unit=091-24&category=ice-tips-to-be-safer for more information.

Ice Safety: The 1-10-1 Rule

❄️ 1 minute to control breathing after cold water shock;
❄️ 10 minutes of meaningful movement before muscle function is lost;
❄️ 1 hour before loss of consciousness from hypothermia.

Through public education, training, and outreach, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliarists support Active Duty operations by helping share lifesaving cold-water safety knowledge—because prevention and preparedness are part of the mission.

Nothing kills a fun day on the water like running out of fuel!

You can avoid this by using a third of your fuel to get where you're going, a third to get home, and keeping a third in reserve for any unforeseen delays.

Keeping our tanks full and managing our fuel is not only wise, but good seamanship.

Several different configurations but they all mean the same thing -- operating a boat after dusk or in other periods of low visibility.

Navigation lights are essential both at night and in low visibility. They help you identify a vessel’s direction, movement, and right of way.

Red means give way.
Green means stand on.
White indicates a vessel’s presence or movement.

Understanding navigation lights helps prevent collisions and keeps waterways safe. Always check your lights before heading out.
