Congratulations to Thomas Whitehead, Clementine Hunter expert and friend of Gilley’s Gallery, who was honored as a Louisiana Legend! Part of a 30-year tradition, Louisiana Public Broadcasting honors Louisianians who have excelled in areas of “philanthropy, the sciences, sports, environmental conservation, and the humanities.” Alongside six other outstanding honorees, Thomas Whitehead, Professor Emeritus at Northwestern State University, was recognized for his contributions to the study and preservation of Clementine Hunter Collections. The gala took place on Thursday, April 28, 2022. Check out the link below to view the other honorees being recognized.

Happy Clementine Hunter Day! Today is Clementine Hunter Day in Louisiana! Declared a year ago, the idea to proclaim October 1st as Clementine Hunter day was promoted by Loletta Wynder, director of the Creole Heritage Center at Northwestern State. Wynder cited Hunter’s contribution to the state through her large body of artwork that resides in museums and galleries across the world. State Representative Kenny Cox of Mansfield stated that while Clementine was “small in stature, through her paintings and quilts, Clementine Hunter occupies a place at the pinnacle of American culture.”

Look no further than LPB’s airing of Clementine Hunter’s World, a Louisiana-produced documentary that explores the life and art of Clementine Hunter through photographs and paintings by the artist. Previously shown at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, the documentary will premiere on Monday, August 23rd at 7:00pm followed by an encore on Saturday, August 28th at 8:00pm.
