Historic Bath State Historic Site resides on land once inhabited by indigenous members of Algonquian-speaking language groups. By the late 1600s, European settlers had established homesteads in the Bath area, and in 1705 Bath became the first incorporated town in North Carolina. In 1716, the Port of Bath became the first official port in North Carolina. Bath’s early years were marked by political rivalries, armed conflict, and piracy. After its tumultuous beginnings, industries such as naval store production and agriculture maintained the small town throughout the 18th and early 19th centuries. These industries were supported by laborers, artisans, and merchants, including enslaved and free men and women. When Beaufort County government moved to newly-formed Washington in 1785, Bath lost most of its importance and commerce. While Bath is no longer a center of trade, the original town limits encompass a historic district today. At Historic Bath, you can visit two historic homes, the Exhibit Center, and a 1-mile walking tour. Thomas's Church is also open to the public. The Exhibit Center and Vanderveer House are wheelchair-accessible. The walking tour may be driven if desired.

Part-time position at Historic Bath North Carolin State Historic Site

What: Historic Bath, State Historic Site has a vacancy in its part-time staff. This is an excellent opportunity and a resume builder for those interested in a career in public history.

Where: Historic Bath, State Historic Site, in Bath, N.C located in Beaufort County, between Edenton and New Bern.
When: The vacancy period is September 2026-until filled. The position works a minimum of two to three Saturdays a month in addition to weekday work and some seasonal Sundays. The employee will work no more than 20 hours a week at $15.00/hour. No benefits. This is an 11-month position with a one-month separation with the opportunity to reapply.
Who: Applicants should have an interest in history and a desire to share that interest with others. Preference will be given to those seeking a career in public history.

Pay: $15.00

Major Tasks to Be Performed: The primary task of this position is visitor services. This includes greeting visitors, providing an orientation to the site, conducting sales in the gift shop, and conducting guided tours of the 1751 Palmer-Marsh House and the 1830 Bonner House.

Additional Duties and Tasks: Temporary employees assist with opening, closing, and cleaning of the site and its historic structures. This may also include the restrooms when needed. Part-time employees are responsible for site security in the absence of full-time staff. Additional opportunities include historical research, event planning, etc. The position offers the employee an insider’s view of life at a historic site. Part-time employees at Historic Bath have an excellent track record for gaining full-time employment at various historic sites and museums.
