Frederick Nichols Studio Frederick Nichols Studio and the Nichols Galleries In 1997, the Nichols purchased the Barboursville Hotel, a landmark building for the village.

1n 1975, landscape artist Frederick Nichols and his wife, Beth, were searching for a home and studio when they stumbled upon Barboursville, a quaint village that had seen better days, but offered exactly what the Nichols needed: a reasonably priced building close to the inspiration for Frederick’s art, the Blue Ridge Mountains. An old general store became their home, printmaking workshop, and stud

io, where Nichols, a graduate of UVA and Pratt Institute, began producing his silkscreen prints and paintings. Over the years, his interest in landscapes has grown, and today Nichols spends much of his time hiking in the mountains. Through his art, he hopes to “renew an interest and desire not only to protect, but also appreciate, the natural world.” Nichols work has been exhibited in galleries and museums from New York to California, and internationally in Japan and Italy. A year later, Beth Nichols opened Nichols Gallery Annex with “A Celebration of the Landscape,” featuring paintings by Regional Artists. Since then, the Annex has exhibited the work of over 50 Mid-Atlantic artists, whose work ranges from contemporary realism to abstraction.
