National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Mary Anne Carter will join residents and community leaders in downtown Bangor on Thursday, August 27, for Shared Tables, Shared Stories, a free community potluck supper presented by the Maine Arts Commission , Community Plate, and Maine Humanities Council .

The gathering will take place from 5:30–8:00 p.m. at Pickering Square and is open to the public. Chairman Carter will attend alongside Maine Arts Commission leadership, representatives from Maine Humanities and Community Plate, local storytellers, the Downtown Bangor Partnership, and community members from Bangor and the surrounding region.

“Sharing a table with Chairman Carter and others in Bangor is a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate how creativity builds connection and strengthens our communities,” said Amy Hausmann, Executive Director of the Maine Arts Commission. “Shared Tables, Shared Stories invites us to meet new people, listen to one another, and turn strangers into friends through the simple act of sharing a meal and sharing our stories.”

“Gathering around a table to share food and stories is one of the most meaningful ways we can connect with one another and celebrate the traditions and experiences that shape our communities,” said National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Mary Anne Carter. “As we celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary, I’m delighted to join the people of Bangor in celebrating the stories, traditions, and creativity that help shape our shared American story.”

Bangor marks the first urban gathering in the statewide Shared Tables, Shared Stories series, bringing the project into the heart of downtown at Pickering Square. The setting offers participants an opportunity to experience Bangor’s broader cultural landscape before gathering around the table for the evening.

Guests are encouraged to arrive early and spend the afternoon exploring downtown Bangor’s arts and cultural offerings. A guided walking tour will be available before the dinner, and attendees can also explore the city independently using Bangor’s interactive public art map. The Zillman Art Museum is free and open to the public, while the Bangor Public Library offers galleries and art within one of the city’s landmark cultural spaces. Additional museums, galleries, performance venues, and cultural destinations can be explored through the Bangor Culture and Art Collective.

The evening will center on the simple act of gathering around a shared meal. Participants are encouraged to bring a dish and its recipe, along with the story behind it if they choose. During the supper, guests will share food and conversation around the table, followed by live storytelling from selected storytellers. Recipes and stories collected throughout the statewide series will contribute to a community cookbook commemorating the people, places, and meals shared during the nation’s Semiquincentennial. Contributing a dish is encouraged but not required.

Free parking will be available for attendees in the downtown parking garage. Guests should take a ticket upon entering the garage and will be able to exit without charge during the event.
