William Cyrus Metcalf, a member of the local U. S. Coast Guard crew, lost his life in the surf at the beach, south of the lookout station, shortly before noon April 28, 1922.
He enlisted in the army May 23, 1918, and served in the war with some of the first American overseas troops. He participated in three major operations on the western front. One of those was at Chateau Thierry. He was honorably discharged.
Metcalf enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard here on August 1, 1921, and was conceded to be one of the best oarsmen on the crew. He had received a high school education at the Chemawa Indian School at Salem, Oregon. and was a brilliant student. Captain J. L. Nutter of the local station, states that Metcalf spent much of his time in study and that he possessed a wonderful memory. He had made such progress in the work of the Guard that he was in line for promotion. He was especially competent in mathematics.
Buried in Bandon’s Averill Pioneer Cemetery--one of many we remember today.
