Today is Manila Galleon Day! On October 8th, 1565, the Spanish ship San Pedro arrived in Acapulco, Mexico after a 4 month return from the Philippines becoming the first ship to map and complete that grueling voyage. Historians widely consider the establishment of this trade route to mark the beginning of a continuous global economy by bridging all major continents.

To learn even more, come see our 1/12 scale model of a Manila Galleon with cut away to reveal the inner working of this historic ship.

Inside the Sully Woodland Art Education Center,, one particular piece presents joy to the eyes, as well as a profoundly compelling background story. The artist behind this stunning piece of work is Rukundo Jean Baptiste, born to a Rwandan family, and only 4 years old when the horrific Rwandan Genocide of 1994 took place. Nearly a million people were killed over approximately 100 days - largely through machetes and other close range weapons. (This would be similar to nearly three 9-11 tragedies each day for 100 consecutive days in a country the size of Massachusetts).
