Mount Clare Museum House

Mount Clare Museum House Mount Clare is the 1760s Georgian home of early Maryland politician and patriot, Charles Carroll, Barrister.
(11)

Owned by Maryland and operated by the B&O Railroad Museum and the National Society of the Colonial Dames in America in the State of Maryland, Mount Clare is one of the oldest houses in Baltimore. It tells the story of Charles Carroll, barrister, his wife, Margaret Tilghman Carroll, their family, and the slaves and indentured servants who lived there. Carroll objects furnish the house in addition to other 18th and 19th century antiques. The museum not only emphasizes those who lived in the house, Carrolls and slaves/servants, but also reminds the visitor of the house's use by others, including the Union Army during the Civil War and a German social club at the end of the 1800s.

Mount Clare and Homewood Museum are both Carroll houses, so we are always happy to help each other out. Last Saturday, Homewood had an open house showcasing their new exhibit and interpretation on slavery. Fiber processing was an activity the enslaved at Homewood took part in, so Homewood asked our director to do a spinning demonstration. Be sure to check out the exhibit and all the hard work put into the interpretation!

One of our frequent visitor, Alicia, visited Dorothy Blake Carroll's grave. Dorothy was the Barrister's mother and a distant relative of Alicia's. Alicia was kind enough to share images of Dorothy's tomb. Look at the family crest--you can see the two lions and sword on the left for the Carroll's. The section of her stone states "she left issue two sons and one daughter who inherit her Beauty and to be hoped they will her Virtues." She died at age thirty-two, before her children reached adulthood. Thank you for sharing, Alicia! #cemetery #18thcentury #grave #ancestry

Getting ready for Mount Clare's Colonial Christmas,Dec.8th 11-4 Music and Beaten Biscuit Demo!
When I was in Catonsville Community College in the late 80s, I used to walk around the park there. I don't know that it was set up as museum but I'm happy to see that it is now. The next time I come home, I will have to visit. I couldn't place the address until I saw the old Montgomery Wards building.
