Chag urim sameach!

Did you know that the main Jewish dental fraternity was founded in Baltimore? Alpha Omega has fostered international unity and inclusion within the dental profession since 1907. Shown are the chapter group photos from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery in 1918 and 1922, as well as student portaits of members Dr. M. D. Leftig and Dr. W. Rosenfeld, both taken in 1911!

It's officially the holiday season! Who's your favorite seasonal representative?

Here at the National Museum of Dentistry we can't think of a better figure than Hermey the Elf. Not only is he Rudolph's best friend, he understands the importance of dental hygiene and regular checkups!

Have you ever thought about what going to the dentist would be like if you had to sit in a regular chair the whole time? Sounds uncomfortable! But thanks to Dr. James Beall Morrisson's 19th century invention we have the ability to fully adjust dental chairs, allowing dentists to work from a variety of positions.
Dr. Morrisson practiced in multiple countries, but would receive his patent for the adjustable dental chair in 1867 in England, ushering in a new age of patient comfort. Four years later, he would also patent the first foot powered drill.

Always excited to support our friends AHEC West and provide opportunities to learn about career pathways in dentistry and the health sciences, while sneaking in some important history of how scientific thought and innovation led to the field as we know it today.

Learn more about AHEC's important mission and their visit to other parts of the UMB campus at the following link.

During the 2024 summer, the Maryland Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) Program at UMSOM welcomed 40 high school students to campus across Western Maryland, rural Eastern Shore, and Baltimore City schools to explore a broad spectrum of careers in healthcare, from Shock Trauma to dentistry.

Happy Universal Children's Day!

Initially started to celebrate the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, an international document outlining protections for children, it's become a day to celebrate children around the world.

We think all kids could agree there is nothing wrong with making oral health fun and a part of their healthy lives with iconic characters, great stories, and some cartoons!

We want to pay our respects to all veterans past and present today. Military dentists have played a major part in keeping active and retired members of the military healthy.

This officer's sword comes from Major General Walter D. Love, an army dental officer who served between 1920 and 1954! This sword was likely produced in 1920, the year that MG Love was commissioned, and would have been primarily intended for ceremonial use.

In honor of Veterans Day this year, the museum developed a brief online exhibition: Dentistry, Notable Dentists, and the U.S. Military.

The exhibit explores the journey the dental profession and the military took to advance dentistry and oral health as a necessary component of overall health, and, ultimately, a public service.

Check out the ADANews article about the exhibit's launch at https://adanews.ada.org/ada-news/2024/november/national-museum-of-dentistry-launches-us-military-exhibit/ and check out the exhibit itself at https://www.dentalmuseum.com/dentistry-and-the-military/

Happy National Candy Day!

With Halloween right behind us, keep in mind your children's oral health. Pediatric cavities are no joke, so if your kids are big into the Halloween candy make sure they're following up with regular tooth brushing and a fluoride based mouthwash to protect those pearly whites.

Non-fluoridated mouthwash does provide some benefits - fresher breath, the removal of food debris, and mild plaque control. However, fluoride mouthwash provides these benefits and more, such as as strengthening enamel and reducing tooth decay, setting your kids up for a healthy oral care routine!

Though the full moon has already passed, keep your eyes out for werewolves this week.

While human teeth develop to handle an omnivorous diet of both meats and vegetables with 32 adult teeth, wolves and dogs' teeth are much sharper to handle a carnivorous diet with 10 more teeth than adult humans. Ouch!

It's getting to be that spooky time of year - but that doesn't mean you should forget about you or your children's oral health. Even the great monsters like Dracula know that regular checkups are important to keep that perfect smile.
