Maryland Art Place (MAP) is excited to host its 14th annual UNDER $2500 affordable art sale where artwork is sold on a first-come-first-served basis right off our gallery walls! Newly rebranded as UNDER $2500 - this event promotes the purchase of artwork by artists in the Maryland region. Guests can expect to mingle with other artists, collectors, patrons, and general art enthusiasts at the event. Take your purchases home with you the night of the event. Gift wrapping will be available on-site!

MAP would like to send a huge congratulations to Maryland artist, Toby Mendez who has been selected for the inaugural Black Sox Memorial Project in the upcoming Westport Park, part of the Reimagine Middle Branch redevelopment currently underway.

Three initial sculptures will be placed within a larger $30 million public park on the Middle Branch of the Patapsco River in the Westport neighborhood as part of a phased project public art initiative slated for 2028.

The Memorial supports the need for figurative sculptures that authentically represent and uplift the incredible history of Black athletes in public art. The Black Sox have an incredible legacy not just in the baseball hall of fame, but also in local Baltimore history and the larger Civil Rights movement.

It's an uncertain time for the arts. Institutional and government funding is less predictable every year, and contemporary art spaces across the region have closed.

For 45 years, MAP has been the accessible middle ground between museum and commercial gallery. It's a place where artists find exhibitions, studio space, sales, mentorship, and fiscal sponsorship, and where the public experiences contemporary art for free.

Our 45 FOR 45 campaign asks individual supporters to help us raise $45,000 by December 31. Your gift helps keep MAP's historic downtown Baltimore building open and working for artists and communities across Maryland.

⚜️ SOVEREIGN IS MY TRADITION ⚜️
Join us this Sunday, October 18, 2-4pm at Hotel Indigo for our public reception celebrating Baltimore-based artist VILLAGER's solo exhibition. See you there! 🥂

About the artist:
Actively investigating the liminal intersections of material memory and sensory intelligence, migration, Yorùbá knowledge production, and postcolonial African identity, VILLAGER synthesizes their paintings into a dynamic topography of critical inquiry into the poetics of relational interplay between objects, bodies, and spaces, utilizing layers and applications of color, movement, rhythm, layering, texture, pattern, scarification, and mark-making to examine how form, design (beauty aesthetic), function, and content intersect to produce alternate ways of seeing, being, and knowing rooted in the post-colonial Afro-futurist consciousness. Their work is often characterized by undulating and errant, neural-like, semi-circular woven patterned marks and gestural scars that take form through an amalgamation of abstraction, figuration, and collaging traditions, emerging as a sovereign creolized visual language that engages questions of culture, identity, consciousness, and belonging. Through their work, VILLAGER ultimately invites the viewer to reexamine what it means to be shaped and transformed by what we sense, experience, know, remember, and sustain.

Have your work purchased by local buyers & collectors, just in time for the holidays! Maryland Art Place (MAP) is seeking artists for UNDER$2500, our upcoming winter benefit exhibition & affordable art sale. The exhibition will include approximately 1-3 works by each selected artist (scale dependent – in the case of smaller works more than 3 pieces may be accepted). Each individual piece must retail for $2,500 or less.

DEADLINE: November 1 @ MIDNIGHT
