Even if you’re not familiar with the term “en plein air,” you’ve almost certainly encountered (and admired) this painting tradition. Painting outdoors, or in open air, increased in popularity in the 1870s, when paints became available in tubes, freeing artists from the studio. This summer, look for en plein air artists as they capture the beauty of Baltimore’s Mount Vernon Place. Then this fall, you’ll have the opportunity to view—and purchase—their work at the Mount Vernon Place Plein Air Art Show on September 29, from 1 to 5 p.m., at the Garrett-Jacobs Mansion. Tickets are available at Baltimore Heritage: (https://bit.ly/2wHuXQr). Learn more about the history of en plein air painting with this video introduction from the Tate art institution.
