Baltimore Clayworks Baltimore Clayworks' mission is to develop, sustain, and promote an artist-centered community.
(281)

Since 1980 Baltimore Clayworks has grown to include 12 resident artists and 20 or so associate artists. We've been blessed to have 23 to 26 trustees at any given time and 15 full time, part time, and contractual staff members. We engage more than 25 instructors, 20 interns and work-study students, dozens of volunteers and hundreds of donors, all of whom make Clayworks a unique, vibrant and communi

ty-centered institution. Our exhibitions showcase the best of international, national and local ceramic artists working in ceramic sculpture, pottery, installation and conceptual ceramics. Today, our educational programs which began with 40 dedicated individuals, teach the discipline of ceramics to more than 1200 students on our Mt. Washington campus, and through our nationally acclaimed satellite programs, reach 500 children and senior adults in Baltimore’s most challenged neighborhoods. Clayworks' educational program is led by artists who are both locally treasured and retain high national profile in the field of ceramics.

Storytelling took shape in clay during our recent Visiting Artist Workshop with Janathel Shaw. Participants spent the day exploring figure sculpture through soft-slab, layering, and pinch techniques while drawing inspiration from personal stories, poetry, sketches, and imagination. From thoughtful journaling moments to expressive sculptural forms, the workshop fostered creativity, reflection, and community in the studio. We are grateful to Janathel for sharing her knowledge and artistic practice with our community, and to everyone who joined us for such an inspiring day of making. We can’t wait to see these pieces again after firing!

✨ Community Spotlight: Valerie Hall-Butler ✨

For Valerie Hall-Butler, Baltimore Clayworks has been more than a studio - it has been a place of healing, friendship, and growth. Reintroduced to Baltimore Clayworks in 2014 following a disabling work injury, Valerie turned to clay as art therapy to regain strength in her hands and manage pain. What she found was also a welcoming creative community. Valerie first connected with Baltimore Clayworks back in 1992 through our Mondawmin Mall location, where her daughter attended after-school classes with Sam Wallace. Years later, she returned as a student and member, building lasting friendships in Sam’s Thursday Night class.

“Baltimore Clayworks has been my refuge when things are tough at work or life. Clay has been very therapeutic.”

Valerie loves handbuilding and Jamaican coiling, especially creating unique vases. She is also proud to share what she has learned with her own students, introducing young people to the joy of ceramics. Her words to live by, inspired by Albert Einstein: “Creativity is intelligence having fun.”

Last month, our Community Arts Department and Empact Art .life partnered with community sites to create ceramic tesserae for the mosaic. A huge thank you to Park Heights Academy, Creative City, B-SPIRIT-A²Y, St. Francis Neighborhood Center, and Stadium Place for your incredible contributions! Thank you to everyone who shared design ideas for the upcoming mosaic seating installation! With your input, collaborating artists at Empact Art created a beautiful design inspired by the blues and greens of a healthy waterway — a reminder of the important role we all play in protecting our local waterways, especially the Jones Falls.

Want to be part of the project? Join us for upcoming public tile-making sessions:

Saturday, June 6 | 12:00 – 2:00 pm

Baltimore Clayworks is proud to feature Steven Young Lee of Helena, Montana, in “Contemporary Porcelain: From Tradition to Innovation”, on view now through May 23, 2026. Steven Young Lee is a contemporary artist whose porcelain work examines identity, belonging, and the layered complexities of cultural inheritance. Based in Helena, Montana, Lee has exhibited and lectured internationally and spent 2004–2005 working and researching in Jingdezhen, China, and Seoul, South Korea. From 2006 to 2022, he served as the Resident Artist Director of the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts, where he sustained an active studio practice while helping lead one of the most respected ceramic institutions in the country.

“As the son of immigrant parents, I am often situated between cultures. Living and working in metropolitan centers as well as rural communities has raised questions of identity and assimilation. As a second generation Korean American, my identity has felt neither fully Korean or American, and it is through my work where I investigate topics of race and belonging. I cross-reference decorative themes from various sources, East and West, to set up unfamiliar, discordant or ironic relationships. Color associations are used to investigate cultural associations and context they are viewed in. Intentionally deconstructing vessels recalibrates notions of classical perfection and beauty and seeks to critique ideas of failure and expectation, craft skill and the innate value of an object. By morphing traditional decorative practices, I am challenging a deep history of craft protocols and questioning the boundaries and authenticity of identity, ownership and intent.”

Experience Steven Young Lee’s work in “Contemporary Porcelain: From Tradition to Innovation”, an exhibition that explores the enduring legacy of porcelain while showcasing the bold ways artists are redefining this historic material today. On view March 21 – May 23, 2026, in person and online.
