Kyle Hackett's paintings explore race, class, and social standing through self-representation and the constructed image. Hackett deconstructs historical ideas of identity and fixed-painting techniques through subtexts of the staged, self-aware portrait. He examines the psychological experience and formal positions within portrait painting and the power dynamic of the picture plane. Hackett creates still-life "vanitas paintings" from discarded reference photographs of self-portraits, drawing connections between different bodies of work. By combining portraiture, still-life, and silhouette, he considers painting as a conceptual tool to refer to and undo itself, its image, and its source material.
Kyle’s Guest Artist Corner feature is on display now, until December 13, 2024.
