Juneteenth is more than a holiday. On June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas with the news that the more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state were free.

This day came to be known as Juneteenth — a time to celebrate, gather as a family, reflect on the past and look to the future. In observance of this day, the Mower County Historical Society will be closed.

It's time to kick off our special events and launch our special fundraiser! We're so thankful for the support of our members and donors and we can't wait to see who all of our "$250 for America250" button recipients will be. We think this makes a great keepsake for this special anniversary year. They also look great when paired with one of our special celebration t-shirts, sweatshirts, and tote bag, too! 😉 We may be celebrating a national milestone, but all history starts local! Let's show our excitement and pride for Mower County history!
