On this day in 241 BC the First Punic War was brought to a climactic conclusion.

The Battle of the Aegates (or the Battle of the Egadi Islands) was fought off the Aegadian Islands, off the western coast of the island of Sicily on 10 March 241 BC. It was the final naval battle fought between the fleets of Carthage and the Roman Republic during the First Punic War. The result was…

Almost 2000 years after a volcano buried the city of Herculaneum, we may have discovered a way to read its priceless library of ancient scrolls

Informative. Not perfect, but informative. Might want to check your volume before hitting play.

"The sheer volume of words available for discovery is probably larger than the entire works of Shakespeare,"

I've been keeping up with his new development, but had no idea there were so many scrolls available to unravel. Exciting stuff!

When I was a child, no more than 7 or 8, my uncle built a 1:72 scale model of a section of the siege works of Alesia on an old door. And so the seed was planted.

A nice graphic of how Marian legionaries would perform a charge. Quite intimidating to be on the receiving end of, I am sure!

That initial pilum volley would be nerve-racking, men dying, pilum points embedding in your shield, perhaps even far enough to harm you through it! Being forced to drop your ruined shield and face the charging wall of professional heavily armoured soldiers unprotected. A terrifying spectacle, indeed.

Note the legionaries in the first 2-3 rows are the ones to throw their pila, I can't imagine any behind that could manage it with the extended distance and the close proximity of their comrades. - Praetorian

In the twilight hours of a hot summer day in 2013 5000 pint-sized Celts led by Davnoros the Bald ambushed a cohort of young but courageous Roman recruits under the questionable authority of one Aaronious the Hasty. Though the young Romans fought bravely they could not resist the sheer numbers of the foe, and were forced to retreat to quarters. The survivors will return in 2014 with a foam vengeance.

COH V will once again be participating in the Sherwood Forest Summer Camp program, hosting boffer sword and board battles for the fate of Britannia around the Seven Sisters camp fire on July 10th, 17th, and 24th at 7PM (dates and times pending official confirmation).
