Enjoy this sweeping journey through the landscapes of Texas commissioned by the Bullock Museum in honor of our 25th anniversary year. The piece is performed live by Montopolis’ nine-piece orchestra with music composed by Justin Sherburn and immersive multi-screen visuals curated by photographer Christopher Zebo.

Starting at 6 p.m., enjoy a reception in the Museum’s 2nd floor atrium featuring charcuterie bites, sweet treats, and a cash bar. The performance begins at 7 p.m.

Celebrate Texas Archaeology Month by exploring a Black-owned blacksmith shop discovered during the widening of FM 455 in North Texas. Learn more below.

In the early 1870s, formerly enslaved blacksmith Thomas “Tom” Cook Sr., his wife, Lethia Perry, and their children moved to Bolivar, Texas, to build a new life. Cook initially worked for a blacksmith in Bolivar named James Barwis, and in 1882 he purchased Barwis’ shop and began operating his own business. Over time, he became a landowner, farmer, minister, Prince Hall Freemason and community leader.

Cook’s blacksmith shop was discovered during the widening of Farm-to-Market 455 in Denton County by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) in 2020. Archaeologists were brought in to investigate the site during the winter of 2020–2021, launching the Bolivar Archaeology Project, an in-depth excavation of the blacksmith shop and a neighboring 19th century hotel. TxDOT and the archaeological team partnered with Cook’s descendants, professional blacksmiths, and the Denton County Black community to build a comprehensive picture of Cook’s life.
