The First Amendment Museum is looking for friendly, curious volunteers to join our team as docents!

Docents welcome visitors, assist our tour guides and help guests learn about the five freedoms of the First Amendment: religion, speech, press, assembly and petition.

They also help share the story of the historic Gannett home, the family’s publishing business and the Gannetts’ unique connections to the Five Freedoms.

This year, the First Amendment Museum is collaborating with the Maine State Library and local libraries in Kennebec County to recognize Banned Books Week.

Banned Books Week invites us to explore important questions about access to ideas, freedom of expression and the role of the First Amendment.

The week also includes Let Freedom Read Day on October 10, when people across the country are encouraged to take at least one action in support of the freedom to read. Actions can be as simple as checking out a challenged book, supporting a local library or learning more about censorship and access to information. Bite-Sized History: On September 24, 1957, President Dwight D. Eisenhower deployed federal troops from the 101st Airborne Division to Little Rock, Arkansas, to enforce the integration of Central High School.

The events surrounding the Little Rock Nine became a defining moment in the struggle for civil rights and drew national attention to questions of equality, constitutional rights and the role of government in protecting them.

They also showed the importance of a free press in documenting historic events and bringing them into public view. History gives us important opportunities to examine how our constitutional freedoms and protections are understood, challenged and upheld.
