Maine State Museum The Maine State Museum seeks to share what is meaningful about Maine and its place in the world. **The museum is temporarily closed.

Unfortunately, the major renovation project at the Maine State Museum will likely mean that the museum will not reopen until 2026.**

As the dates for the museum’s reopening become more definite, more information will be available on the museum’s website. The Maine State Museum is the state’s foremost general museum, collecting and exhibiting the finest of Maine’s natural and cultural heritage. The museum’s collection includes almost one million objects and specimens, representing the breadth of Maine’s rich legacy. In representing the state’s best efforts to preserve its dynamic history, the Maine State Museum helps Maine people understand the present and imagine and prepare for the future. The Maine Labor Mural is back in its place of honor in the Cultural Building. It was painted by Maine artist Judy Taylor in 2008 and transferred to the Museum in 2019. Come visit the digital interactive exhibit to explore the stories portrayed in the Mural.

🍎💻 Do you remember having one of these in school?? 🍎💻

Maine’s state government recognized technology’s potential in the classroom in the early 2000s and created the Maine Learning Technology Initiative through the Maine Department of Education. Maine was the first state in the nation to have this type of program. It provided personal computers for students and teachers in the 7th and 8th grades throughout the state. This laptop was part of the first distribution of computers to Maine schools. The program was successful and expanded to include Maine high schools in 2009.

👏 The museum is excited to welcome Samantha Esancy in the role of Lead Educator! 👏

Samantha was born and raised in the small town of Appleton, nestled in serene Midcoast Maine. She has lived in different parts of the country and traveled around the world, yet the beauty and charm of her home state have always drawn her back.

Samantha has a strong background in education, with a B.S. in Elementary Education from the University of Maine Farmington and an M.S. in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern Maine. She also served as a public elementary school teacher in Maine for nine years. She loves working with learners of all ages and is excited to step into an entirely new classroom setting.

As the Maine State Museum prepares to reopen and begin a new era, Samantha looks forward to welcoming visitors and engaging with students.

🐳🪸 On September 12, we welcomed more than 600 people at the Cultural Building for a WHALE of a pre-opening party!

Guests enjoyed all-day activities, including the UMaine Touch Tank, performances by KindKids Music, free sea-themed treats from Morning Moose Coffee, unique shopping at the Museum Pop-Up Store, AND a chance to meet Chunk, Maine’s most famous life-sized inflatable whale from Within the Whale.

Thank you to the great vendors, volunteers, and visitors for a fabulous day. We can’t wait to SEA everyone on October 24 for the museum’s Phase I Grand Reopening Celebration! 🎉
