Unfortunately, the major renovation project at the Maine State Museum will likely mean that the museum will not reopen until 2026.**

As the dates for the museum’s reopening become more definite, more information will be available on the museum’s website. The Maine State Museum is the state’s foremost general museum, collecting and exhibiting the finest of Maine’s natural and cultural heritage. Th

🌲🛶 Greetings from the Pine Tree State! 🌲🛶

This circa 1926 postcard shows an unidentified lake with a lone individual resting on a canoe. It was regularly reprinted through the 1940s, often with different colorings and alterations, including sometimes removing the person from the scene entirely.

⛱️ Did you know that Old Orchard Beach’s iconic pier was almost totally destroyed by a fire on August 15, 1907?

The great fire destroyed much of the downtown of Old Orchard, including several hotels, the first 100 feet of the pier, and many cottages. The fire left thousands of people without homes, and many camped on the beach until aid arrived, as seen in this scene’s ‘temporary spa’.

🦞🚤 As another Maine summer starts to wind down, we’re sharing some of our favorite postcards from the museum’s collection...

Kicking us off is a pictorial postcard from 1950 promoting Maine tourism. Featuring images of Portland Head Light, the Wadsworth-Longfellow House, and the Maine State House, along with scenes of potato harvesting, fishing (and a moose, of course), this postcard offers a sampling of the best Maine has to offer. 🫎
