Q: Why aren’t you doing well in history class?

A: Because the teacher keeps on asking about things that happened before I was born.

TODAY, May 12th TILIW is going to be a little different, making history fun again! Let’s compare the older generation vs the younger. What it was like growing up, what chores did they have, school subjects, what did they do for fun or what did they splurge on at the store. Join Randal Oaks and three local kids, Frank Kessler, Adelina Berkel and Oliver Heining from Augusta as they gather on stage to compare life as a youngin…only generations apart. We would like the kids’ perspective on what is History to them and will offer them the chance to elaborate on what they’ve seen in their short few years. The audience can get involved as well, come with a good comment for the kids, tell them what you remember growing up, especially in Augusta!

See you at the Harmonie Verein, doors open at 6, event starts at 6:30. Cash bar available.

This week and last, chainsaws, w**d trimmers, earth prods, and shovels, in the hands of three FHA members and two former members of the defunct Boone-Duden Society, beat back grape vines, honeysuckle, and small trees, to expose rapidly disappearing grave markers at the Isaac Darst burying ground.

Bob and Deb Brail, along with Angela Stephens, paulO, and Judy Renner, gathered on a bluff overlooking Matson to clean up the cemetery. Eventually, the landowner, Chris Koenig, paid us a visit to cheer us on.

Isaac Darst was born in Woodford County, KY, and emigrated with his father (David) to Missouri in 1797. The Darsts were early settlers in what has since been known as Darst's Bottom, on the Missouri River. Besides Isaac and his wife (Phoebe Bryan Darst), there were 8 other family members, and an unknown number of slave burials.
