How do you bonsai? Around the world, people dedicate their lives to cultivating miniature trees — but their bonsai look different. An artist's home landscape, native flora, and cultural practices shape their creations. Our current exhibition /Bonsai United/ explores how bonsai is expressed around the world.

Today on our YouTube channel (https://youtu.be/2_q6th_eOn0 ) explore the Italian Alps, where Mugo pines grow struggling between rocks, snow, and avalanches. Hear from a rugby player-turned-bonsai artist on why the mountain always shows up in the tree.

Mauro Stemberger has practiced bonsai for over three decades and is internationally recognized for his work with alpine and European conifers. Trained as an architect, he founded Italian Bonsai Dream in 2005, a workshop space dedicated to advanced practice and exchange. He travels extensively worldwide, teaching and sharing his approach with students and professionals (including a visit with us, October 2025, second photo).

We love it when artists draw, sketch, and paint on site! Alex Maus Design and Jessica Cao stopped by this week. Here's some of their work in progress.

Bring your own sketchbook when you visit. We just ask that you stay mindful of other visitors and keep the trees easy for everyone to access and see.

If you'd like more company, Urban Sketchers Tacoma will join us at the museum on Friday July 24 when we stay open late, until 7pm. More info here: https://www.facebook.com/share/1HNPqTWBTZ/

Tag us if you sketch on a visit, we'd love to see what you make.

Our Volunteer Docents are in the museum many days of the week. When you visit, just look for their vests and ask them anything about bonsai!
