South Union Shaker Village

South Union Shaker Village The historic site of the South Union Shaker Village South Union today is more than just a memory.

It is a place to visit and learn firsthand about the Shaker way of life. Several of the original buildings have been restored and now house a fine museum of Shaker folklife and material culture and a unique gift shop.

This installment of "Curating Authenticity" is focusing on how we interpret period spaces in the 1824 Centre House. Watch to learn about a new artifact reproduction that helps us better tell the story of South Union Shakers.

We are most appreciative to Bryan Caviness for donating his time, talents, and the materials to reproduce this South Union bed!

Progress continues in the 1854 Wash House, and this week we are "Curating Authenticity" with a hearth restoration. The Shakers originally placed brick hearths in the buiding, but in the early 20th century, these were removed and filled with concrete. We are now restoring the hearths using reclaimed Shaker brick.

South Union Shaker Village needs your help! Please consider signing our petition for a local election option in November.

The goal is to be able to sell our bourbon in the Gift Shop and to resurrect the distillery at South Union Shaker Village.

You can sign the petition here at the museum, or we can come to you!

If you are a registered voter who lives in the same precinct as the museum, please consider signing. For reference, the precinct is the area shaded in green on the maps.

South Union was the only Shaker village in America that made whiskey, inspiring us to unveil our own bourbon in December 2024. The label designed for the bottle is derived from a fruit preserve label used by South Union in the 1870s.

We continue "Curating Authenticity" through small details in the 1824 Centre House mantels. When early restoration efforts began in the 1970s, the applied mouldings on the mantels were removed as they were thought to be a later, Victorian addition. After further researech it became apparent that the mouldings were original to construction of the building. Many thanks to our craftsman, Roger Ryan, for reproducing the mouldings that show the Shakers at South Union did not shy away from decorative features in their buildings.

There's still time to donate to the SUSV 2026 Annual appeal!

Our goal is to make consistent advancement toward being a better historic site and museum. We strive to continue to discover more effective educational tools, search for innovative opportunities for outreach and development, and to utilize the best of historic preservation practices.

Once a year, SUSV rolls out an appeal for contributions that ultimately makes restoration, education, and development a possibility. The results greatly influence the outcome of our entire year of work. We hope that you will continue to partner with us in our quest to preserve American history through the lens of the Kentucky Shakers.
