🚗 BEFORE THE DUESENBERG BECAME A LEGEND…

✨Meet Maytag Car #989, an early automobile with a connection to two names that helped shape American automotive history: Fred and August Duesenberg. The Duesenberg brothers designed and built the chassis for this car, which was likely manufactured in late 1909 or early 1910. In 1909, businessman Fred Maytag invested heavily in the company, and his name became part of its story as production expanded in Waterloo, Iowa.

This early chapter reminds us that automotive history is full of unexpected connections between the engineers, investors, and innovators who helped put America on wheels. At the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum, we celebrate the people and stories behind the names.

🚨 DID THE AUTOMOBILE HELP INDIANA BOOTLEGGERS?

During Prohibition, getting illegal liquor from one place to another meant staying mobile. And automobiles offered something horses couldn't easily match: speed, distance, and the ability to travel between towns in a fraction of the time.

Meanwhile, right here in Auburn, Indiana, innovative automobiles were making their mark on the American automotive industry.
We're not saying Auburn-built cars were involved in bootlegging. But the rise of the automobile changed the landscape of the Prohibition era in ways worth exploring. 👀

History has a few twists in the road. What other unexpected connections between cars and American history should we explore?

Once the sound of industry filled Auburn, Indiana. Designers dreamed, workers built, and the Auburn Automobile Company helped create some of the most remarkable automobiles of its time.

Then came the Great Depression. Production dwindled, and in 1937, the company’s automotive story came to an end. The factory fell silent, but the legacy remained.

Today, the former administration building lives on as the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum, a place where the past never really disappears.

Some stories refuse to be buried 👻 come to the museum for real spooky stories on October 29th for our Car After Dark event, or stop in any day and visit our Works Behind the Wheels exhibit 🙌
