The Museum is open despite road construction in the area!

Jack Springs Road just north of our entrance will be closed August 31 through September 4 for cross drain replacement. Signed detours will be in place, with a detour route on Poarch Road to Atmosphere Road. You can also access the Museum from Jack Springs Road South.

The Poarch Creek Indians Tribal Historic Preservation Office recently attended a bridge commemoration near Shorter in Macon County, Alabama.

THPO Billy Bailey and Clayton C**n joined representatives from Thlopthlocco Tribal Town, including Tribal Historic Preservation Officer David Frank and Tribal Town Council members Tanya Walker and Tracey Johnson, to recognize the bridge's connection to Thlopthlocco Tribal Town history. Gatherings like this bring Tribal Nations together to honor shared history and reaffirm a commitment to protecting the cultural resources and heritage that connect us to our ancestors.

The Poarch Creek Indians recently welcomed representatives of the Māori iwi of New Zealand to Atmore for a two-day cultural and leadership exchange.

During their visit, the delegation stopped by the Poarch Creek Indians Museum & Welcome Center, where our staff led them on a tour of the exhibits showcasing the history, culture, and journey of the Poarch Creek Indians. The visit also included a stickball demonstration at the Museum. Beyond the Museum, the delegation met with Tribal Council leaders and had conversations about sovereignty, self-governance, and the shared challenges Indigenous peoples continue to face around the world. The Māori visitors also performed a haka for our Fire Department.

The Museum is open despite road construction in the area!

Jack Springs Road at Martin Road will be closed August 24 through August 28 for cross drain replacement. Signed detours will be in place, with a detour route on Poarch Road to Atmosphere Road. You can also access the Museum from Jack Springs Road South.

July 25 marked a significant moment for our community. A historical marker commemorating the Battle of Burnt Corn Creek was officially dedicated at Jennings Park in Brewton, with Tribal Historic Preservation Officer Bill Bailey sharing the history and significance of the battle for those in attendance.

The ceremony brought together community leaders, elected officials, Tribal Elders, Tribal Citizens, and our Tribal Princesses for a morning centered on one shared commitment: making sure this history is not forgotten. The Battle of Burnt Corn Creek is part of who we are, and markers like this ensure that future generations will know it.

"The Forgotten Creeks.” That phrase brought national attention to the story of the Poarch Creek Indians. But we were never forgotten by our families or our neighbors. What was missing was government acknowledgment. A silence that lasted until federal recognition in 1984.

Despite land loss after the Treaty of Fort Jackson and generations of displacement, our ancestors remained in Alabama. Through kinship, language, and community, we preserved our identity.

Today, our story stands as a testament to resilience, identity, and survival in Alabama, honoring the strength of those who held on so that future generations could stand tall and never be forgotten.
