🎉 Congratulations to the 2026/2027 Working Artist Project Fellows: Jessica Elaine Blinkhorn, Sonya Yong James, and Marie Munk!

We are thrilled to celebrate these exceptional artists as they begin their Working Artist Project fellowships!

A heartfelt thank you to our 2026/2027 Guest Curator, Evan Garza, for their thoughtful selection process!

“It was a genuine privilege and joy to serve as guest curator for MOCA GA’s Working Artist Project and to be immersed in Metro Atlanta’s exciting community of artists. The process of narrowing down the applicants to just eight semifinalists was quite a challenge given the incredible diversity and caliber of artistic practice among applicants from greater Atlanta. A far more difficult challenge was the process of selecting just three fellows from among the artists with whom I had the pleasure of performing studio visits this week. Each of the semifinalists are brilliant, deeply talented practitioners, and all of whom are deserving of this award.

“Based on these criteria, the following artists have been selected as 2026 WAP Fellows: Jessica Elaine Blinkhorn produces challenging performance and interdisciplinary work which questions conceptions and assumptions about persons with disabilities, and whose work is aimed at effectuating political and legal change through a discourse of care and caretaking; Sonya Yong James works masterfully with textiles and organic materials, engaging with memory — personal, cultural, and ancestral — to create objects whose curious and exciting physical forms are unforgettable; and Marie Munk, a Danish immigrant living and working in Atlanta, whose large-scale sculptures and interactive installations explore the tension between society, the human body, and our reliance on technology. Each of these artists reflects MOCA GA’s creative ethos, its emphasis on the achievements of Georgia’s contemporary artists, and the mentorship and creative aims of the Working Artist Project. Join us at 6:30 PM for MOCA GA’s annual WAP BASH as we announce the 2026/2027 Working Artist Project Fellows!

This year’s fellows will be announced by guest curator Evan Garza, a global contemporary art scholar, q***r art historian, and Curator at MASS MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts. Garza’s distinguished career includes a Fulbright Scholarship at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA), grants from the Teiger Foundation and The Andy Warhol Foundation, and curatorial leadership roles at the Moody Center for the Arts at Rice University, the Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Garza also co-founded the Fire Island Artist Residency (FIAR), the world’s first residency dedicated exclusively to LGBTQIA2S+ artists.

The Working Artist Project (WAP) is a year-long fellowship program facilitated by the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia (MOCA GA). Created to champion established visual artists of merit residing in the Atlanta metropolitan region, WAP provides support, visibility, and resources to advance artistic practices.

WAP is supported through grants from the Charles Loridans Foundation, The Antinori Foundation, the PNC Foundation, and the Molly Blank Fund of the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation.

The Working Artist Project (WAP) is a year-long fellowship program at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia that supports established visual artists of merit who reside in the metropolitan Atlanta area. This initiative provides an unparalleled level of support for individual artists, expands the Museum’s mission, and strengthens the arts and cultural component of Atlanta. Each year, a guest curator selects three artists who represent our city’s best and brightest.
Evan Garza is a global contemporary art scholar, q***r art historian, and Curator at MASS MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts. Recent honors include a Fulbright Scholarship at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) and grants from Teiger Foundation and The Andy Warhol Foundation. Garza has held curatorial and institutional leadership roles at the Moody Center for the Arts at Rice University, the Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas, and School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (now SMFA at Tufts). Garza was cofounder of Fire Island Artist Residency (FIAR), a New York nonprofit and the first residency program in the world exclusively for LGBTQIA2S+ artists. They earned their M.A. from the Williams Graduate Program in the History of Art at the Clark Art Institute.
