A quilt made of Monkey Wrench quilt blocks is said to be the first quilt displayed when the time had come for slaves to seek freedom on the Underground Railroad. Slaves understood this to mean "gather your tools for the journey".

This quilt block, and many others, along with Atlanta's Connection to the Underground Railroad, will be covered in Saturday's program.

Saturday ~ August 29th @ 1 PM ~ 114 SW Arch St. Atlanta, IL

Parking available in the City Lot behind the building. Enter through the Atlanta Museum door off the alley, or the front door.

NEW Special Exhibit ~ the Underground Railroad & Vintage Quilts

In conjunction with the NEW Exhibit, our Fall Program Series kicks off on Saturday , August 29th ~ 1 - 3 PM.

* Learn about Atlanta's connection to the UGRR
* See a presentation of Pre-Civil War Quilts
* and delve into the often controversial Quilt Codes & Messages of the UGRR

This Program is FREE, but pre-registration is required.

2026 Phase 2 Brick Orders Update

The ordering window for Phase 2 of the Memorial Brick project will close on Friday, August 14th at 12 Noon.

We will still accept brick orders after this date, but the next group of bricks, Phase 3, will not be placed until Mid-March, 2027.

Thank you to all who have ordered! The Memorial Project has been a much bigger project than we first anticipated when we began, but it is AMAZING how it is turning out.

We would not be able to do this without your incredible support and backing.

Special shout-out to Liz's Barn Quilts ~ Liz & her awesome assistant, Sharon ~ who once again led a stellar class. We love having you - Thank You so much for your willingness to travel to our little Museum and share your gift for amazing Barn Quilt designs.

A huge shout-out to everyone that came out to participate/model in the photoshoot of Historical Atlanta locations and the businesses that were willing to open their doors.

The photographer took over 2000 pics!! We should receive the collection of images in a few weeks and will share them here, on the Atlanta Public Museum FB page, our website ~ Atlanta Public Museum ~ and with the participating locations.

Thank you again, for your enthusiasm and fun spirit as we work to showcase Atlanta and all its wonderfulness.

We are so excited to share a very unique opportunity that the Atlanta Public Museum has been selected to participate in ~ a FREE photoshoot of our exhibits and any other locations in Atlanta we would like to showcase!

When?? Saturday, July 25th - - - - 1:30 PM - 5:30 PM

Where?? We will start at the Museum before venturing out and about

Who?? You!!! We need volunteers to be the 'models' in the photos.

Someone asked the other day, "Why is the Memorial Brick Project taking so long?"

Now, there is an unbelievably long list of issues that we have been dealing with to get to the point of finally laying the bricks ~ but for now we're going to go with the new Manager just can't seem to make up his mind.

So, Mr. Squirrel what is the problem this time?!?!?
