In February of 1871, Jefferson Franklin Long, the first Black congressman from Georgia, became the first Black congressman to speak on the floor of the House of Representatives. He spoke out against a bill that would modify the loyalty oath that congressmen are required to take so that former Confederates could pledge it, as well denouncing the terrorists groups, including but not limited to the Ku Klux Klan, that tried to suppress the Black vote.

This Presidents Day, we honor Jimmy Carter—a leader whose legacy reminds us that the presidency doesn’t end when the term does.

From championing human rights and helping broker peace at Camp David to decades of hands-on service through Habitat for Humanity, President Carter showed that humility, compassion, and integrity can define a life in public service.

His example proves that true leadership is measured not just by power, but by character—and by the good you continue to do long after leaving office.
