Old Car City in White, Georgia contains the worlds largest known classic car junkyard. Visitors enjoy the beautiful vegetation of the deep south that is intertwined with the hundreds of cars that reside in Old Car City. Old Car City started as a Car Dealership in 1931 and is still family owned and operated. Come enjoy the Old South environment, folk art, ghosts of beautiful classic cars, and much

more! With over 34 acres and over 4000 American-made cars from the early 20th Century, these cars, trucks, vans, and even a couple school buses are placed in such a way as to be ideally suited for photos, videos and custom camera shoots. Over the 8 decades since first started, thousands of photographers, videographers, ad agencies and media companies have visited Old Car City USA. Popular news magazine and newspaper companies, like CBS Sunday Morning, the New York Times and Georgia Public Television, have made press releases and/or video segments and transmitted it worldwide. Mayor of Old Car City USA, Dean Lewis, welcomes all who come out to visit his varied collection of automobile art with a little help from Mother Nature. You can come and just stroll along with winding paths for a nominal fee or, for a few dollars more, bring a camera and take pictures and/or videos and share them with friends. Among the many cars at Old Car City USA, there is the last car Elvis Presley ever bought back in 1977 just a couple months before he died. Also, a movie starring Andy Griffith and Johnny Cash used one of the cars that now call this place "home." The honorary mayor of the "City," Dean Lewis, is also an artist in his own rite with some of the most unique canvas...the styrofoam cup. In his upstairs loft, Lewis has hundreds of styrofoam canvases featuring his artistic talents on display along with some paintings he will proudly show off. One of many ideas Mayor Lewis has created for new and returning visitors is the Ring of Cars featuring a double stack of cars in a circle approximately 150 feet in diameter where he hopes to "sell" spots on the sides and fenders of cars and register those who "leave their mark" so that the soon-to-be photographed cars featuring those "signed" spaces will be made available on the Internet via private photo collections and videos. Old Car City’s story is one of those great Georgia originals — the kind of thing that starts small, grows by accident, and ends up becoming a world‑famous landmark without ever trying to be polished or perfect. It’s very much a “family business turned folk-art empire” kind of tale.

Here’s the arc in a way that really captures its character.

đźš— From a Family Junkyard to a Global Phenomenon

1. The Lewis family roots (1930s–1950s)

Old Car City didn’t begin as an attraction at all. It started as a family-run general store in the 1930s. Over time, the Lewis family began buying and selling used cars and parts — nothing glamorous, just practical, rural Georgia business.

By the 1950s, the car side of the business had grown enough that the property slowly shifted from “store with cars” to “car yard with a store.”

2. The slow accumulation (1960s–1990s)

This is where the magic happened.

Instead of crushing or scrapping old cars, the family — especially Dean Lewis’s father — tended to hold onto them. Cars came in, but very few ever left. Over decades, the collection grew into the thousands.

Nature did its thing:

• Trees grew through fenders
• Moss covered dashboards
• Paint peeled into wild colors
• Vines wrapped around bumpers

What was once a junkyard became a kind of accidental outdoor museum.

3. Dean Lewis takes over — and embraces the weird (1990s–2000s)

When Dean Lewis inherited the property, he didn’t try to “clean it up” or modernize it. Instead, he leaned into its personality.

Dean is an artist at heart — he paints, writes quirky signs, and has a sense of humor that shows up all over the property. Under him, Old Car City became less of a salvage yard and more of a folk-art environment.

He started allowing photographers to wander the trails. Word spread. People realized this wasn’t just rust — it was texture, history, and storytelling.

4. The rise of social media & photography tourism (2010s–present)

Once photographers discovered it, Old Car City exploded in popularity.

It became:

• A bucket-list spot for urban explorers
• A dream location for portrait photographers
• A pilgrimage site for classic car lovers
• A curiosity for travel bloggers

Images from Old Car City started circulating worldwide. Suddenly, this quiet patch of woods in White, Georgia was being featured in magazines, travel shows, and international photography groups.

5. Today — a world-famous “rust cathedral”

Now it’s known as:

• One of the largest classic car junkyards on Earth
• A living art installation shaped by time and nature
• A Georgia roadside legend

Dean still wanders the property, greeting visitors, telling stories, and adding his hand-painted signs. It’s still a family business — just one that happens to attract people from all over the world.
