In ancient Mesopotamia, Lagash was a beacon of agricultural prosperity. Flourishing around 2500-2300 BC, it relied heavily on sophisticated irrigation networks fed by the Tigris and Euphrates. This city-state thrived on its ability to produce crops, nourishing its population. However, the very systems that built its wealth would ultimately lead to its ruin.

As irrigation increased, it drew salts to the surface, slowly poisoning the soil. Meanwhile, the rivers began to change course, creating marshlands that replaced fertile fields. By the late 3rd millennium BC, Lagash faced a dire situation. Archaeological evidence reveals remnants of tell mounds, remnants of a once-bustling civilization now surrounded by desolate wetlands.

The growing salinity and encroaching marshes forced inhabitants to abandon their home. They migrated north, seeking arable land, leaving behind a ghost city. Canals that once flowed with life stagnated, sealing Lagash's fate as nature reclaimed its territory.

Historians still debate the speed and extent of these changes, questioning the roles of salinization and river shifts in Lagash's demise. While the evidence is complex, one truth remains clear: even the mightiest cities can fall victim to environmental forces.
