John Sabraw Artist Talk at Kennedy Museum of Art

Friday, October 16 | 5:30pm to 7pm

Distinguished Professor of Painting John Sabraw’s exhibition, Telluric, at the Kennedy Museum of Art (KMA), offers a compelling synthesis of painting and sculpture that builds on his two decades of nature-inspired inquiry. Sabraw’s abstract compositions explore natural phenomena, the earth’s complex ecosystem, and humanity’s essential yet often fraught relationship with it.

Refreshments are provided by the Friends of Kennedy Museum and the Chaddock + Morrow College of Fine Arts.

A little glimpse of fall at The Ridges! 🍂

As Bobcats return to Athens for Homecoming weekend, there’s plenty to enjoy around The Ridges! With its beautiful historic architecture, hints of fall color, and the Kennedy Museum of Art’s galleries to explore, it’s a lovely place to spend a fall afternoon.

If you’re back in Athens for the weekend, stop by and explore a familiar part of Ohio University’s history!

Experimental Sketching in the Galleries at KMA✏️

Thursday, October 1st | 5:30–7pm

We will guide participants through simple prompts to create unique images inspired by our current exhibitions. Using dry media such as graphite and colored pencils, we will explore mark-making on translucent materials, including tracing paper and plastic vellum. Feel free to bring a sketchbook. Materials are provided by the Ohio Arts Council.

~Making art with others builds shared connection, reduces stress, and fosters empathy.

All levels: no prior experience required. Everyone is welcome to join our FREE session. No registration necessary. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the opening reception of John Sabraw’s Telluric!

It was wonderful to see so many visitors come together to celebrate the exhibition and experience Sabraw’s work.

Telluric features abstract compositions exploring natural phenomena, the earth’s complex ecosystems, and humanity’s relationship with the environment. Sabraw’s dedication to ecological matters is also reflected in his increasingly sustainable studio practices and approach to artmaking.

We would also like to thank everyone who helped bring this exhibition together, as well as guest curator Christy Davis, Curator of Exhibitions at the Canton Museum of Art, for sharing A Curator’s Perspective during the reception.

A special thank you to the Friends of the Kennedy Museum of Art for sponsoring the opening reception and helping make the evening possible. The Telluric exhibition is generously supported by the Ohio Arts Council.

If you weren’t able to make it to the reception, there’s still plenty of time to experience Telluric! The exhibition is on view through December 6, 2026, and admission to the Kennedy Museum of Art is always free.

Porch Songs with Emily Singer

🗓️Thursday, September 17th | 5:30-7 pm.

The KMA is thrilled to host local musician Emily Singer for a free outdoor concert on our front porch. Bring your music- and art-loving friends! Everyone is welcome.

Emily Singer was raised in a musical family immersed in jazz, folk, and traditional Appalachian string band music in Athens, Ohio. A talented singer from an early age, she has performed as a lead vocalist with several local bands and has recently begun writing and performing original music. Whether accompanying herself on piano or backed by her exceptional four-piece band, Emily’s songs weave together emotional themes and heartfelt melodies, drawing on vintage jazz, folk, blues, and soul.

Light refreshments will be provided by the Friends of Kennedy Museum of Art.

Children age 13 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Admission to the KMA is always free.

Telluric by John Sabraw – Public Artist Reception at KMA

Join us for the opening of Telluric, a solo exhibition by Distinguished Professor of Painting + Drawing John Sabraw.

Celebrate the opening of this remarkable exhibition and hear A Curator’s Perspective from guest curator Christy Davis of the Canton Museum of Art at 6:00 PM.

Telluric features paintings, sculpture, and video inspired by the natural world and Sabraw’s decades-long commitment to environmental stewardship. His luminous abstract works explore the relationship between people and the planet while showcasing innovative pigments created from iron oxide recovered during the cleanup of polluted streams.

ON VIEW August 28–December 6, 2026.
