Experience true mastery of collage and assemblage art by four extraordinary artists in our January show And/OR: on view through February 6. We’re sharing profiles of each artist separately.

James Allen is a nationally acclaimed artist who turns to illustrated books as his inspiration and art medium. Page by page, he excavates his chosen volumes to reveal a new narrative from illustrations and text formerly hidden between the covers. He artfully exposes select images at multiple layers within the book to create each delightfully complex, cohesive work of art. In an evolution of his practice, his latest works are deeply layered collages that leave behind the boundaries of book covers, displaying illustrations at a multiplicity of levels bound by the mesmerizing intricacy of his precise cutting technique.

His book excavations have been exhibited at the Bellevue Art Museum in Washington, and can be found in public collections at UCLA, Johns Hopkins University, Ringling College of Art and Design, and the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. After being based in Portland for many years, James has recently relocated to Nashville. His works in this show are exhibited courtesy of Russo Lee Gallery in Portland, Oregon.

Our January show is definitely a must-see! It’s up through February 6, so grab a friend and pay us a visit! Guest curator Matthew Palmgren has brought together four artists working in Oregon who are recognized for their impressive contributions to collage and assemblage art. We’re featuring each of these outstanding artists in a separate post.

John Stahl (1937–2017) was an influential figure who has left an important legacy of works that continue to be admired, and we’re excited to include a selection from his estate. John was an eminent artist, educator, and environmental activist working in many different styles and mediums. From his home at Netarts Bay, he immersed himself daily in nature and demonstrated his profound love of the Oregon coast in a prolific variety of work encompassing printmaking, painting, collage, assemblage, and sculpture. His 45-year exhibition history in the Pacific Northwest included key galleries and museums. The Portland Art Museum and the Hallie Ford Museum of Art at Willamette University hold his artworks in their permanent collections.

We’re introducing you to these brilliant artists one at a time: Judy Vogland is a renowned artist from Portland whose exhibition history and teaching practice span more than four decades. Her collage and assemblage artworks in this show are compilations of historical photographs, documents, ephemera, and found objects bound by layers of painting and textured surfaces. They burst with a heady mix of real and imagined tales, a tumultuous stream of intriguing history, striking characters, and improvised situations.

Rex Amos, one of the artists featured in our feature exhibit "AND/OR: mixed media & assemblages", is a prominent Oregon artist, poet, bibliophile, philosopher, activist, and jazz musician who has spent recent years living and working quietly in Cannon Beach. His accolades as a mixed media artist stretch back to the early 1960s avant-garde scene in Portland, where he first exhibited his signature collage art with chine-collé printmaking techniques, juxtaposing provocative imagery and text into edgy compositions with literary and political allusions. His trailblazing work caught on, and he became the first assemblage artist to exhibit in the Pacific Northwest, showing his work in regional galleries and at the Portland Art Museum. Today, his artwork is in museum collections, and the Pacific Northwest Artists Archives at Willamette University holds a repository of his papers. One of the works in this show from the early days of his career was exhibited in 1963 at the Portland Art Museum.

"AND/OR" was curated by Astorian Matthew Palmgren and will be on view through February 6.

Judith Altruda, a jewelry artist from Tokeland, Washington, designs involve hand-fabricated metalworking techniques common in past millennia to create statement jewels in silver, copper, bronze, gold, sea glass, gems, and ancient coins. The designs are inspired by the gods, goddesses, nymphs and other symbols of old lore and legend. Other influences are river mist, sand swept shores and sea worn treasures from the artist's home and travels.

Each firing of Richard Rowland's wood-fired kiln, Ahikaaroa, is an extraordinary event that takes place only twice a year. The process relies on the contributions of many community members and the ineffable contribution of the surrounding lands: clay, minerals, and wood interacting with fire. Rowland works closely with an enthusiastic fellowship of volunteer assistants, many of them talented ceramic artists. Collecting and preparing seven cords of wood for Ahikaaroa takes several months, loading hundreds of ceramic works into the kiln takes three days, the firing is actively stoked and continuously monitored over seven days, and cooling takes two weeks. Over the long firing period, the interaction between materials from the land—clay and wood—and the elemental force of fire create a magical transformation, literally creating art from mud. The fire-marks and melted wood ash deposited on the clay surfaces lend a character to each piece that tells the story of its journey through the fire.

See Richard's solo exhibit, Ahikaaroa, through January 9. Visit RiverseaGallery.com for more images of the firing process and available stoneware.

Jesse Narens creates art through an intuitive process involving many layers, often reflecting on humanity's tumultuous relationship with nature and personal transformation. With no attachment to preconceived ideas, pieces begin without sketches, and seemingly finished works may continue on and be layered over at any time. The paintings grow and evolve into finished works.

In Ebb and Flow, Astoria artist Lindsey Aarts considers her surroundings through a lens of rhythmic transformation and contemplates ways in which we interact with our natural environment: how we shape it, how it shapes us, and how it tells our stories over time. Each work is a visual testament to the endless march of change and asks the viewer to consider our role in this perpetual ebb and flow. Andrews, a woodblock printmaker, creates atmospheric landscapes with the filter of civilization removed. Stripped to their essential, natural forms, they explore the dichotomy of stillness and energy present in the natural beauty of our region and reflect the longing for a glimpse into the eternal. The show will be up through December 5th.

Nina Vidal from Portland, Oregon presents a spectacular show of gemstone beaded jewelry. In a career spanning several decades, she's become known for her exquisite, intricately stitched beadwork. She creates from an impressive multitude of natural stones, particularly opals of all kinds, treating her collection of gems as colors in an artist’s palette to craft designs with color shading and ombre effects. Her exhibition begins during Artwalk with a trunk show offering a wide array of pieces, followed by a curated selection showcased through December 5.
