Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum

Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum Entertain, Educate, and Inspire. The museum moved to its current location in 1998 upon completion of a new indoor facility.
(2022)

The SAC Aerospace Museum, located between Lincoln and Omaha near Interstate 80, utilizes over 300,000 square feet of exhibit, education, and event space to educate, inspire, and entertain its guests. Organized in 1959, the original mission of the museum was to commemorate the contributions of the Strategic Air Command, which until 1992 was headquartered at Offutt Air Force Base. The museum houses

an impressive collection of military aircraft and other artifacts, many of which have been restored in the museum’s on-site restoration facility. As part of its commitment to education, the museum has recently established a partnership with the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Office of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Education to provide cutting-edge educational opportunities for student, teachers, families, and adult learners. Traveling exhibits, permanent exhibits, and a variety of special events provide additional unique experiences for the museum’s members and visitors.

81 years ago today, World War II officially came to an end.

On September 2, 1945, the Empire of Japan signed the surrender documents aboard the USS Missouri, formally ending the war. Today, we remember the millions of service members who served and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

This 1945 Christmas Day dinner menu from the 20th Air Force reflects the pride and hope felt following the Allied victory. Inside, General James Parker wrote:

“For all that you have done… I give you highest praise. Now, in the period of peace and readjustment… may you continue your good works, that the victory may be a victory for lasting peace!”

Many of the aircraft and artifacts here at the museum help tell the story of those who served and the pivotal role military aviation played in World War II and beyond.

We honor those who served, remember those who sacrificed, and continue to preserve their stories.

What happens after historic aircraft engines are moved? The work to preserve them continues.

Our volunteers recently spent some time power washing and cleaning these historic components as we prepare them for their next chapter at the Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum. A big thank you to our volunteers, Rhett Zeplin (on the left) and Dwight Sorensen (wielding the power washer) who continue to put in the time and effort to help preserve these incredible pieces of history!
