We are saddened by the passing of Medal of Honor Recipient Bruce Crandall.

Bruce Perry Crandall was a great American who answered his country's call to service and went above and beyond for others. In uniform, Crandall flew a transport Huey helicopter in the first large-scale helicopter air assault in history. For his leadership and actions under fire on November 14, 1965, he later received the Medal of Honor.

Bruce continued serving throughout his life, sharing his hard-earned lessons with others well into his 90s.

Bruce loved the National Medal of Honor Museum. He and his dog, Huey, were there when we announced the Museum would be built in Arlington, Texas. They were there when we broke ground in 2022. And Bruce and Huey were there when we cut the ribbon and opened the Museum last year.

We are grateful we got to share those moments with him.

While Bruce may be gone, his legacy of service and sacrifice will live on through this Museum, inspiring America and generations to come.

Ryan Pitts never speaks about the Medal of Honor as an individual achievement.

Instead, he talks about the soldiers beside him in Afghanistan—the men who volunteered, protected one another, and kept fighting under impossible conditions.

Their lives and stories remain part of what the National Medal of Honor Museum exists to preserve.

Our mission is to inspire America with the lives and legacies of Medal of Honor Recipients.

On Memorial Day, we partnered with Freedom 250 and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to remember Medal of Honor Recipient Capt. Humbert Roque “Rocky” Versace and share his incredible story.

While held in a POW camp during the Vietnam War, Rocky famously sang “God Bless America” at the top of his lungs in his final minutes alive.

In Washington, D.C., Medal of Honor Recipient Patrick Brady spoke about Rocky’s extraordinary life and legacy during An Evening of Stories and Service, a Memorial Day fireside chat honoring those who served and those who never came home.

The National Medal of Honor Museum is proud to stand alongside Freedom 250 today at Arlington National Cemetery as we honor the sacrifices of those who gave their lives in service to our nation.

We gather in gratitude and to ensure their legacies continue to live on through the stories we carry forward.

As Medal of Honor Recipient Jim McCloughan reflected:
“I stand here as a personal witness to the sacrifices of young heroes who never made it home.”

On Memorial Day, we pause to remember those who gave their lives in service to others.

Their stories remind us that service is not defined by a single moment, but by a commitment carried every day, often at great cost.

Among them are 644 Medal of Honor Recipients who were killed in action—ordinary Americans who took extraordinary action in the service of others and never made it home.

We remember them not only for how they served, but for who they were, and the lives they led beyond the uniform.

How do you carry their memory forward?

While the Medal of Honor we recognize today is standardized in design, the ways it has been worn, displayed, and preserved throughout history are anything but uniform. From early presentation cases to personalized display pieces, each variation offers a closer look at the individuals who carried the Medal and the eras they lived through.

During this month’s View the Vault, Senior Historian Kali Schick shared different versions and designs of the Medal of Honor throughout history, alongside unique presentation and storage pieces that reflect the personal stories behind them.

View the Vault is a members-only program offering close-up access to artifacts and the stories behind them. Join us in the Library every third Thursday, 9:30–11:00 a.m.—no RSVP needed.

As the Indy 500 returns today, we’re remembering Eddie Rickenbacker’s lasting connection to the race. Did you know he placed 10th in the 1914 Indy 500? Years later, he purchased the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1927 and successfully operated it through the Great Depression until 1945.
