The Arlington Historical Museum will not be open this weekend (Sat and Sun, July 16-17). We are readying the museum for window refurbishment and have packed all the artifacts that are NOT currently on exhibit for a move to off-site storage space donated by JBG SmithCares.

43 windows in a historic schoolhouse means that many artifacts were stored near windows. We have had to get them all safely out of the way. We've had to use every space to pack them up.

We'll reopen again next weekend Sat, Jul 23. It will again look like normal to you. See you then!

Wow! The Arlington Historical Museum had a record number of visitors today! It was a big day at the museum. First a poetry workshop hosted by Susan Mockler that focused on artifacts from Halls Hill and Freedman's Village. Then visitors started arriving even before we officially opened. Today we assembled 50! sets of shelves in our new artifact storage space donated by JBG Smith. Many MANY thanks to Rose, Michael, Flip, Cathy, Chuck, Mark, Charlie, and Annette for getting the job done in just two hours! Many hands really do make light work.

We are preparing to move artifacts that are not on display so we can begin Phase One of the refurbishment and renovation of the Arlington Historical Museum. Phase One is window refurbishment so we have to move all the artifacts that are not on display. In a building with 67 windows, virtually every window has an artifact near it.

Artifact Spotlight: Tin Toy Capital Airlines Model Plane

The Arlington Historical Museum has acquired a rare tin toy Capital Airliner model made in 1955 by the Biller Toy company of Germany. It is a gift from Ciro Taddeo and was restored by George Axiotis to working condition. The model has an ingenious hand trigger under the carriage that spins the four propellers when squeezed. It is approximately 11 inches with a wingspan of about 10 inches.

The body has the design and logo of Capital Airlines. This airline was the 5th largest airline in the US and its headquarters, training school, and maintenance facilities was based at National Airport from 1948 to 1961 until it merged with United Airlines. The model and an original advertisement are on display now at the museum in the “Pandemic Treasures” exhibit

ALL OF ARLINGTON HISTORY from Native Americans to 9/11.

HISTORIC SCHOOLROOM: The museum is housed in the oldest existing schoolhouse in the county. Built in 1891. Ring the schoolbell!

Hume School Preservation/Renovation Update

AHS has been steadily working on our project to preserve and renovate the Arlington Historical Society at Hume School. We continue to partner with John Milner Preservation Division, part of MTFA Architecture on this project. In July of 2022, we launched a capital fundraising drive to help fund this project. We anticipate the project to be completed in four phases:
● Phase 1: Window restoration
● Phase 2: Exterior repair to provide waterproofing to the building
● Phase 3: Renovation of the interior to provide expanded exhibit space and to update the HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems.
● Phase 4: Addition of an elevator to provide accessibility for all.

Our capital campaign has successfully raised enough funding to start the Phase 1, the window restoration. We are thankful for the donors who have provided their financial support. We are currently seeking grant funding to be able to complete Phase 1 this year. We have also met with county staff to seek some support. To learn more about our preservation/renovation project, visit https://arlingtonhistoricalsociety.org/2021/06/preservation-and-renovation-of-the-arlington-historical-museum/

For the past eight months, the Arlington Historical Society has been working with John Milner Associates Preservation, a division of MTFA Architecture, to conduct a feasibility study of our museum …

We're open today! (Sat, Mar 12) 1- 4 PM

Visit the Arlington Historical Museum today and every Saturday and Sunday from 1-4 pm FREE! Our new exhibit: "Pandemic Treasures" is up! Come and see this uniquely Arlington and eclectic exhibit. While you're there, see all of Arlington history from Native Americans to 9/11 and ring the school bell in the oldest existing schoolhouse in the county.

Many Arlingtonians and former Arlingtonians who were home during the pandemic took the opportunity to go through their attics and basements to decide what to get rid of or give away. The artifacts in this exhibit represent a fraction of all the artifacts donated to AHS since the pandemic began in March 2020.

AHS is always happy to accept donations of things related to Arlington history. We welcome your artifacts, too! Just email us at [email protected]
