We remember the soldiers, and also their families. #MemorialWeek For as long as people head off to fight, there will be those left behind. Here families gather with members of the Anoka National Guard at the Great Northern Depot on North Street in Anoka, MN, waiting for the train to take them to Camp Rucker as the unit was activated to go to Korea. Right foreground with glasses is Loren "Bud" Sage, lady with her back to the camera is Joyce Talbot Meyer, and facing her is Les Meyer. Dated Jan. 22, 1951. #KoreanWar #AnokaCountyHistory

Charles S. Triggs saw first hand the aftermath of Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941 from the deck of the sea plane tender U.S.S Wright. #MemorialWeek

"The Japs hit Pearl before we got in the harbor. So they flagged us—they signaled us to back off, and so we didn’t get in until afternoon of that day. When we came in, well, here’s the Nevada sitting crossways in the channel going in, and the ARIZONA WAS STILL BURNING, and the dry docks were all aflame … You see the shambles, and THE HARBOR WAS … BLOOD AND OIL.”

Exciting news from Archivist Audra! She’s working with Federal Premium to organize their business archive collection. Old documents, photographs, reels of film and packaging samples oh my! Working hard now for their 100th anniversary coming up in 2022 🎉😀 We will be sharing her adventures along the way. Today’s task: figuring out which acid free supplies we need to order.

This 7 foot tall painting "To The Honor of the Members and Alumni of the Anoka High School who answered America's call in the Great War for Democracy 1917 - 1918" includes 170 names and was a tribute from the class of 1919. We knew it hung somewhere in the High School, but couldn't believe our eyes when we spied it in a classroom photograph captured on a slide shown before movies at the Green Theater. #MemorialWeek #AnokaCountyHistory #WWI

Swing by Woodbury Park in St. Francis and think about Albert Woodbury [1835-1863] #MemorialWeek. Albert moved to Anoka in 1853 when he was only 18 years old and invested in real estate and water power for milling operations in St. Francis along the Rum River. He fought in the Civil War as a lieutenant in the 2nd MN Battery of Light Artillery. On September 19, 1863 Albert commanded his unit at Chickamauga. Captain Hotchkiss wrote "Just after the battery was got into position on the new line, a rebel sharpshooter sent a musket ball into Lieutenant Woodbury's left arm, just above the elbow, and broke the bone. From this wound he died in a private hospital in Chattanooga, October 19, 1863. Thus terminated the life of an accomplished young officer, much beloved by his commander and the men of the battery." #AnokaCountyHistory #CivilWar #2ndMNBattery

We are stretching Memorial Day into Memorial Week to remember those who have served in Anoka County. First a look back at this Honor Roll which stood near the corner of Main and 1st Ave in Anoka. The memorial was dedicated on Memorial Day in 1944. After the usual Memorial Day service was held at Oakwood Cemetery those in attendance marched down Main Street and crossed the river to the dedication. #MemorialDay #MemorialWeek #AnokaCountyHistory #WeRemember

The City of Anoka was advised that they couldn’t use taxpayers money for the purpose of constructing it, so the Anoka-Champlin Fire Department proceeded took the initiative and presented it to the City of Anoka. On April 12, 1944,The Anoka Herald described the memorial as “the board, which is constructed in cabinet form, is water and weather proof, the names on plastic forms with gold foil letters enclosed in three glass cases.” It could contain up to 750 names with a cost of about two dollars per name. In May of 1945, four new panels were added to include the names of soldiers from townships. Columbia Heights had their own memorial so no names from that city were included.

Fridley Garden Tour 2018 July 22 Do you have any information on this event? Perhaps a list of the homes, news articles I could access, or pictures. I realize this was a while ago, but I am hoping there was some documentation. My brother's home was on the tour, and unfortunately he died in June while installing brick for the garden. I would appreciate any small thing you might be able to find for me. Thank you so much. pfh
If you have an interest in Genealogy and vintage photographs or documents I'd like to invite you to join our groups "Family Treasures Found" and "Forgotten Faces, Forgotten Places" on facebook. "Our Mission is to rescue vintage photographs, letters, etc., from languishing on dusty shelves and long-forgotten boxes. Through research we strive to reconnect long-lost ancestral history to descendants AT NO CHARGE." The groups, have been formed to display "lost" Identified/Unidentified Photos & Documents so they may be returned to their descendants (or an appropriate historical society, library, etc). Our hope is that, as more people join the group, they will identify our unmarked photos by comparing them to existing photos which they may have in their possession.
I remember when I was going to Northdale Jr High in the 70s. Mr. Rask had us studying Coon Rapids' history. I remember that there was a bit on Mr. Foley the person the street in Coon Rapids was named after. But there is nothing about him on the Coon Rapids history page about him. Could this please be rectified.
We just found out that this concession shed on our property came from the old dragway in Anoka. The previous owner, who aquired the shed saw Evel Knievel jump over 36 trucks there. Does anyone have any old pictures of the dragway with consessions sheds in the picture?
