Honey bees engineer their hives to maximize space, while making sure they can store enough honey in their hive for the winter. Program Manager Lannis Smith shares an amazing look at the hexagonal structures of her bee hive at home, as well as a look into a honey bee's life cycle! Here worker bees are tending to numerous bee larva, or covering the pupae to form what's known as a capped brood. Can you find the bee larva inside the waxed cells?

Domino World 2020

We were so disappointed to not be able to welcome the incredible designers of Domino World back in person this year at the museum.

But leave it to these ingenious individuals to take to the virtual platform, and create an incredibly inspirational display of dominoes, marbles, robotics, simple machines, household items and more. We've never seen anything like this before!

Birds have some incredible engineering skills, taking natural elements found in their habitat and creating extravagent nests! This week's STEM at Home activity is all about how we can use our engineering skills to build our very own bird nests! What would a nest for a songbird look like? Could we build one big enough for a human? Join Program Manager Lannis Smith to see how we could construct these homes for birds using materials found outdoors!

Camp-at-Home launches Monday with another five weeks of amazing experiences. It isn't too late to register and SCHOLARSHIPS are available!

From a parent in week 3: "Camp-at-Home has been a great addition to our at home summer experience, providing unique activities in a convenient delivery format that our kids can participate in with a broad range of parental involvement, giving us flexibility to participate or let them explore on their own, depending on our availability any given day. Thanks!"

Camp-at-Home is specially designed to reduce the amount of time campers spend on a screen and encourage children to spend their summer outside exploring and discovering STEM and the natural world. Getting children up, moving, and engaging in science has always been at the core of camp and continues....

For #worldenvironmentday, we encourage all to take a moment and soak in the peace, tranquility, beauty, and wonder of our natural world. Where would we be without trees, wildflowers, detritivores, and the millions of other organisms that inhabit our planet?
Today our friends at the Leslie Science and Nature Center recorded some of nature's soundtrack this morning at Black Pond in Black Pond Woods. Listen, enjoy, and make sure to thank the natural world around you.
