🔬 There's 4 floors, 250+ interactive exhibits, and a huge museum inside of an 1882 brick firehouse in downtown Ann Arbor.
The building used to be the city's main fire station. Now it's where kids launch air rockets, lift themselves with a pulley chair, and splash through a full water gallery.
That's the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum. It opened in 1982 with just 25 exhibits and a single staff member. Today it draws over 200,000 visitors a year, with exhibits spanning physics, music, geology, and engineering.
The preschool gallery lets little ones dress up as firefighters and climb a kid-sized fire engine, which feels right given the building's history.
If you've got kids who need to burn off some energy and accidentally learn something in the process, this is a solid afternoon.

Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum spreads science and technology discovery across four floors, with 10 gallery areas and more than 250 interactive exhibits. The experience moves easily from testing physical forces to exploring engineering ideas, sensory surprises, and the everyday systems that make a city work. STEAM Park adds imaginative mechanical installations, including an airfoil, propeller chair, window maze, and a towering interactive clock, giving the galleries a lively, experiment-in-progress feel.

Younger visitors have their own welcoming entry point in the Preschool Gallery, where water tables, firefighter dress-up, and a child-sized fire engine encourage open-ended play with a caregiver nearby. Elsewhere, the H2Oh! water exhibits invite guests to crank, pump, pour, and balance objects on streams of water, turning fluid motion into something you can see and feel. It is an easy place to follow a child’s curiosity from room to room, while adults find plenty of clever details to investigate alongside them.
