The Mind Is a Collection

The Mind Is a Collection The Mind Is a Collection is a born-digital museum of eighteenth-century cognitive models. Visit us at www.mindisacollection.org.

The Mind Is a Collection is a born-digital museum of early modern cognitive models. For the last decade or so, I have been studying the spaces in which the philosophies of the British Enlightenment were thought, penned, or put into practice. One outcome of this research is a book, The Mind Is a Collection: Case Studies in Eighteenth Century Thought (Penn, 2015). But this book was all along imagined as the catalogue of a museum, a study of the things that people used to make sense of mental processes. The museum is now online, and can be visited at www.mindisacollection.org.

The Center for Eighteenth-Century Studies at Indiana University

I'm thrilled to be able to tell you that the exhibit catalogue for The Mind Is a Collection has been awarded the Oscar Kenshur Prize by the Center for Eighteenth Century Studies. From their description of the prize: "Since 2007, the Center has awarded an annual book prize to an outstanding monograph of interest to eighteenth-century scholars working in a range of disciplines. The prize is named in honor of the work of Oscar Kenshur, professor emeritus of comparative literature at Indiana University, a dix-huitièmiste par excellence, former Chicago cab driver, and one of the founding members of the Center."

The Center for Eighteenth-Century Studies at Indiana University, formally opened in October 2004, is home to one of the liveliest and most exciting inter-disciplinary communities at Indiana University-Bloomington. The Center brings together faculty and graduate students to discuss new work and new intellectual directions in the broad field of Eighteenth-Century Studies. Our faculty include over twenty active members from six different departments (English, History, Comparative Literature, German, French, Religion). On top of our regular meetings throughout the year, the pinnacle of our annual cycle is the Bloomington Eighteenth-Century Workshop, an intensive, inter-disciplinary four-day event each May which brings some 12-15 scholars to Bloomington to join Indiana faculty and graduate students in presenting and discussing pre-circulated papers on a broad topic. For the topics and programs of the previous Workshops, running since 2002, please see our web page. Since 2013, we have published the proceedings of the Workshop, available at http://scholarworks.iu.edu/journals/index.php/18cy/index

The Center for Eighteenth-Century Studies also supports an annual invited lecture, a graduate recruitment and dissertation fellowship competition, and a PhD minor concentration.
